eCommerce is rapidly changing together with modern technologies and online trends. Check out this blog to learn about its history, current trends, and future developments that may change the industry forever.

Not so long ago, the concept of ordering and receiving products through a computer was just a dream. Now, it’s practically everywhere. We can browse through hundreds of catalogs on our phones and compare brands in a flash.

From small items like clothes and stationery to larger parcels like home appliances and furniture, we can get our hands on almost everything over the internet—and in the comfort of our homes!

Of course, it wasn’t always this glamorous and easy. In this blog, we’ll take you through the history of eCommerce, where it is today, and where it’s headed.

The History of eCommerce

eCommerce has gone a long way from its humble beginnings. In 1979, Michael Aldrich, a British inventor developed online shopping.

Back then, it was called teleshopping. Aldrich’s invention connected domestic TVs to a processing computer via the telephone, which allowed consumers to order from and message businesses using a simple interface. The technique was later renamed eCommerce.

When the Internet and the Word Wide Web became available to the public, eCommerce gained economic viability. In 1994, Pizza Hut started taking online orders on its website. A year later, eBay was born, and Amazon secured its first sale.

From there, more and more people enjoyed Internet access and participated in online shopping. In 1996, there were over $1 billion in online sales. When PayPal was introduced in 1998, it drove the growth of eCommerce further as it provided an easy way to pay online.

Unfortunately, the Internet bubble burst of 2001 left many online businesses bankrupt. To encourage online purchases, companies offered big sales and promos during the holidays. By 2005, eCommerce officially made a comeback and the term “Cyber Monday” was coined to mark the biggest online shopping day of the year.

The following years saw the continuous rise of eCommerce. Hundreds of online shopping platforms were established and global eCommerce transactions breached $20 trillion.

eCommerce Now

Today, eCommerce remains unstoppable. Recent events like the COVID-19 pandemic greatly shifted consumers’ preferences from buying at physical stores to purchasing goods online. And now that most of the world is going back to the old normal, eCommerce maintains its progress.

Important Statistics

So how big is eCommerce, you might ask? That’s something best described using numbers.

Retail eCommerce sales in 2021 amounted to over $4.9 trillion. (Statista)

eCommerce sales currently make up 22% of the total retail sales across the globe. (Morgan Stanley)

93.5% of all internet users have purchased something over the internet. (OptinMonster)

There are over 12 to 24 million eCommerce websites worldwide. (WPForms)

Annual eCommerce sales are forecasted to exceed $6 trillion by 2024. (Shopify)

Current Trends

Modern innovations have improved eCommerce tremendously, creating better online shopping experiences. In 2022, the most influential trends include augmented reality (AR), chatbots, and mobile shopping.

AR as a gamechanger

AR technology allows users to virtually try on a product before making a purchase. AR has been around for a while, but it wasn’t until recently that the technology became mainstream in eCommerce.

Fashion brands utilize AR so that shoppers can “fit” clothes and accessories. Other companies grant users the ability to set 3D models of furniture into their space. Because the models are to scale, consumers get a good feel of the products without having to visit physical stores.

24/7 customer service chatbots

One of the best ways to attract customers and increase repeat buyers is to ace customer service. The advantage of online shopping is that there are many avenues to provide customer service even after business hours. And in this area, chatbots are currently in the lead.

Sophisticated chatbots can assist consumers while shopping by giving personalized recommendations, answering FAQs, and leading them to checkout. The best part is that they’re responsive at any given time.

Mobile shopping domination

Mobile shopping is steadily eclipsing purchases made on desktops. According to Statista, mCommerce (mobile commerce) is expected to grow twofold by 2025, amounting to over $710 billion.

This trend emphasizes the importance of responsive design and a mobile-first approach to web design and development.

Other trends

Apart from the big three, current eCommerce trends highlight personalization, big data, video content, and multiple payment methods.

Challenges

While eCommerce is enjoying the spotlight, the industry isn’t without problems. With millions of shopping platforms available, the market is saturated and small businesses have a hard time converting visitors and earning customer loyalty.

Customer expectations are also at an all-time high since users are accustomed to fast loading times and seamless shopping experiences from established brands. Because there are so many options available, users don’t settle for less and are quick to bounce out of unoptimized websites and web apps.

Another major challenge is cybersecurity and data privacy. Technological advancements are great for business owners and consumers, but they also empower cybercriminals. Since eCommerce platforms process a lot of confidential information, it’s pressing to double down on security measures to prevent data breaches.

On the Horizon

Many experts believe that eCommerce is here to stay. The industry is going to continue evolving as new tools and software are introduced. Unfortunately, this means that businesses that fail to adapt are going to get pushed out of the competition.

As early as now, it’s important to look ahead and keep an eye out for future trends. Voice search and visual search are getting tons of traction but not many eCommerce websites are utilizing them just yet.

Delivery drones are also on the rise. Amazon, UPS, and Domino’s already have them integrated into business operations, albeit on a small scale. There are long ways to go before drones get commercial approval and become accessible to startup brands. But what’s for sure is they will reshape eCommerce significantly.

Finally, and perhaps the most urgent, is the impending death of third-party cookies. When the time comes, eCommerce platforms would have to rethink their strategy on personalization.

Future-proof your online platforms

CSS is an integral part of modern web development. Every year, the CSS Working Group releases new features to help web developers build stunning pages faster. This year, CSS is expected to launch an exciting lineup. Keep reading to learn more.

CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, is a mainstay stylesheet language in modern web development.

In a nutshell, CSS lets you create a set of rules that tells web browsers how to render an HTML document. For example, if you want to change the color of your headlines from black to blue, you’d switch to CSS and enter a code that looks something like this:

h1 {

 color: blue;

}

Of course, that’s an easy example, but the logic behind CSS is fairly intuitive. For that reason, web developers and designers stand by CSS to effortlessly maintain and update the look of their websites.

CSS has changed tremendously over the years to improve its features and code. In this blog, we’re going to look at 7 new features CSS has to offer in 2022.

1. Container Queries

Responsive web design is non-negotiable in today’s context. It’s not uncommon to find consumers who surf the web using multiple devices at once. As such, your site must be prepared to cater to different gadgets with varying screen dimensions.

To do this, you need to adjust your designs and move around visual elements depending on the size of the viewport. The problem is that some components don’t automatically adjust to the changes made to their parent containers.

For instance, a photo would keep its original size even though its container shrank to fit on the screen.

Container queries define the full range of styles components must follow based on the specifications of their containers. You can still use a responsive grid for your general page layout while container queries fine-tune the individual sections of the page.

As you can imagine, this feature presents an elegant solution to common problems with CSS’s Grid.

2. Accent Color

Styling forms is one of the most tedious tasks when building a website. Forms, along with many other controls, follow the default styles of web browsers. If you want to customize their appearance, you’d have to go out of your way to write code from scratch.

A single color change would require a significant amount of work that could slow you down. Accent color addresses this problem by allowing you to adjust the colors used on controls with a single line of CSS.

As of writing, accent color is supported only by checkboxes, radio buttons, range controls, and progress bars. Modifying other form controls require the traditional approach of styling. But don’t fret, we’re sure this feature will earn better browser support after a few more months.

3. Subgrid

A few weeks into exploring CSS, you’ll discover that a recurring problem is aligning nested subgrids with the parent grid. That’s because nested grids act independently of the main grid and each other.

With subgrid, there’s no need to manage separate grids to adjust their dimensions. Instead, you can indicate that certain rows and columns belong to a larger grid and have them respond to new ratios and positions accordingly.

Subgrid is already supported by Firefox but is not yet available on Google Chrome.

4. Overscroll Behavior

Consider a web page with an element that has independent scrolling. When you reach the end, the default setting is for the scrolling to affect the next parent element. This is called scroll chaining.

Some websites take advantage of scroll chaining and work it into their UI design. But for many, scroll chaining is an unwanted effect that confuses users.

Overscroll behavior is an elegant solution that overrides scroll chaining. With it, users can focus on modal content without having to worry about moving the main page.

Overscroll behavior is especially useful for mobile navigation, chat components, horizontal lists, and sidebars.

5. New Viewport Units

Anyone who has ever tried to code a website for Safari iOS knows the pain of having to set viewport units. When a container is set to a size in the unit vh, the mobile browser displays it smaller than expected.

To work around this bug, you’d need to apply a script that resizes the container for you. Aside from the hassle of loading a new script, some workarounds negatively impact Chrome users.

Thankfully, CSS is now offering new viewport definitions and relative lengths. These include vw, svw, lvw, and dvw. These units correspond to 1% of the width of the UA-default viewport size, small viewport size, large viewport size, and dynamic viewport size, respectively.

dvw effectively solves the issue on Safari without causing glitches on Google Chrome. Logical variants like svi/svw are also available.

6. CSS Parent Selector :has()

:has() is one of the features on this list that have yet to gain extensive browser support. It’s a parent selector that lets you choose specific elements based on custom criteria. The best way to understand it is to think of :has() as a parent selector pseudo-class.

It allows you to select <div>s containing <p> effortlessly or apply styles to certain elements depending on their content.

Up until this point, CSS did not support parent selectors to avoid performance issues. Now, :has() opens tons of possibilities as it reshapes CSS entirely.

7. Cascade Layers

The thing that makes CSS so iconic is also the cause of many of its problems. Cascading conflicts and selector specificity top that list, prompting developers to avoid using the cascade altogether.

CSS overrides style changes to one element if another element in the cascade has higher specificity. For big projects, it’s almost inevitable to run into this issue because of the large codebase.

Different methodologies have been developed to circumvent this problem. The downside is that all of them require extra code work that’s time-consuming and inefficient. This is where cascade layers come in.

Cascade layers grant developers better control over themes, frameworks, and designs to take full advantage of the cascading system. Whereas original cascading is built around heuristics, cascade layers allow direct manipulation and management of the internal cascade logic.

By introducing an additional layer into the cascade to define style variations, the feature ensures that the components will not automatically follow the base styles. Instead, components are rendered depending on the rules written on the layer as well as the order of the layers you’ve established.

Conclusion

CSS will only continue to grow and evolve. As we wait for the widescale implementation of the feature above, new ideas are being conceptualized as we speak.

Getting the hang of such updates takes effort but they ultimately improve our workflow. Take advantage of these developments to create robust products for your clients.

Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year. In preparation for the big event, we’ve created a last-minute checklist for your website. Keep reading to help you maximize your earnings and prevent lost sales.

Black Friday is just around the corner. You and your team should have already published targeted marketing campaigns and decided on discounts and promos by this time. The earlier you prepare, the smoother and more successful it will be.

To make sure you’re all set, we’ve created a last-minute checklist for your website. Go over this list and watch this year’s Black Friday Sale go off without a hitch.

1. Site speed and performance

The holidays bring in a lot of new visitors to your website, especially if your marketing team did a good job. While it’s exciting to think that more people will be looking into your store, you must be prepared for it.

Traffic surges cause a lot of problems in site speed and performance if you don’t have the right infrastructure. The last thing you want is to experience downtime in the middle of the biggest sale of the year.

Conduct regular speed tests leading up to the day and ensure that your servers can handle thousands of users at once.

It’s best to have dedicated servers for this occasion so upgrade your web hosting plan if you must. Also, Identify bugs and outdated software and address them immediately.

2. Website copy

Web copy that works on a normal day may not be enough during Black Friday. After all, you’re up against other brands that likewise aim to maximize their earnings.

Optimize your web copy by doing keyword research and incorporating what you find into your copy. Every year is a little different. Current trends and the context of your shoppers influence what they’ll look up online.

Rather than aiming to rank for generic keywords, go for niche-specific or long-tail keywords by adding specifications. They may get less search traffic but they’ll appeal to shoppers who know exactly what they want to buy.

The most important keywords should be on your main headings, title tags, alt texts, and product descriptions. This will make it easier for buyers to find your unique offers online.

3. Landing pages

Hopefully, by now, you’ve realized the power of custom landing pages. Many studies support the use of multiple landing pages to match different buyer personas and traffic sources for increased conversions.

It should go without saying that the ads you run for Black Friday deserve landing pages of their own. This gives consumers the satisfying feeling of continuity which encourages them to see the engagement through checkout.

The design doesn’t have to be anything fancy. What’s crucial is that the content and visual elements are consistent with what the user saw on your ad.

Focus on your offer and remove distractions. Landing pages exist with a singular purpose so anything that strays from getting a conversion has no place in your design.

4. Featured offers

You’ve probably heard a lot about integrating data analytics into your eCommerce website. Come Black Friday, the insights you’ve collected over the years are ten times handier.

Knowing your best sellers helps you maximize profits. Your most loved products should be front and center on your website. If you can come up with a good bundle deal, you’ll attract a big crowd and claim a lump sum by the end of the holidays.

Choosing featured products is crucial since it sets the tone for the rest of the shopping experience. Whatever you highlight should be compelling enough to stroke someone’s curiosity or make the sale in an instant.

As always, place the most important and relevant information above the fold, and don’t forget to optimize banners so they load fast.

5. Discounts

Consumers are enticed by discounts because they create a sense of urgency. A ticking clock on slashed prices nudges buyers to swipe their card and checkout.

Advertise discounts as soon as possible to build anticipation. When it’s finally time to put them into action, make sure that they’re reflected on your website.

Double-check whether or not they appear on product pages and the checkout page. Additionally, see to it that they match what you’ve put in ads and social media campaigns.

6. Promo codes

In the same vein, promo codes afford users the same rush. But what’s risky about them is faulty promo codes result in high cart abandonment rates.

We’ve all probably experienced entering a promo code only to find that it doesn’t work or that it comes with a catch. It could be an issue of minimum spending, restriction to a particular payment method, unclear expiration dates, or simply that you haven’t updated your website.

Remember that your consumers shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to get what they want. Be transparent about the limitations of your promo codes so customers know what to expect from the start. Doing so will not only earn you more sales but also prevent customer attrition in the long run.

7. Checkout experience

Speaking of abandoned carts, nothing kills the prospect of a sure conversion faster than a dreadful checkout experience.

When a customer is ready to pay, don’t block their way with lengthy forms. Buyers should be able to accomplish checking out their cart with just a few clicks, especially if they’ve done business with you before.

Adding multiple payment options helps speed things up and accommodates a variety of users. E-wallets like Google Pay are picking up steam so take steps to include them into your website.

For new shoppers, prioritize securing the sale before asking them to make an account. This way, they won’t need to re-input information they’ve provided and prevent them from bouncing off of your website.

8. Location data

Although we’re talking about eCommerce and online shopping, the pull of brick-and-mortar stores is still undeniable.

If you have a physical store, verify and update your location data on your website. While you’re at it, do the same for your social media pages and Google Maps.

Customers are going to be looking at your official channels for information on store branches, business hours, and contact information, so don’t let them down.

9. Customer service

Excellent customer service is expected of every brand and determines whether or not you’ll see repeat buyers in the future. On the busiest shopping weekend, you want to provide answers fast at all times.

Enabling a chatbot is the easiest way to keep communication lines open and serve customers in a timely manner. You can program chatbots to respond to frequently asked questions, help buyers during checkout, recommend products, and more.

Chatbots are very useful but if a customer needs to speak with a live agent, make sure you have that option available.

Aftercare is also very important but often neglected. A simple thank you message upon checkout reinforces buyers to stick with your brand.

Furthermore, consumers should also be able to track their purchases on your website without breaking a sweat. Provide them with a tracking number and contact information in case something goes awry.

10. Mobile-friendliness

Finally, test for mobile friendliness. By the end of the year, mobile commerce sales are expected to reach $3.56 trillion, accounting for almost 70% of all eCommerce.

Invest in responsive design and mobile sites. Regardless of screen size, your website must be easy on the eyes, intuitive, and responsive to all user requests.

Work with a Professional Team of Web Developers and Designers

Web accessibility combines mindful design and modern technologies to help everyone have a pleasant experience while surfing the web. In this blog, we take a quick look at the importance of web accessibility and what you can do to improve your website.

One of the earliest steps in building a website is identifying your target audience. It’s important to know who you’re designing for to deliver quality web pages that can get users to convert.

Buyer personas help you understand your ideal customers. These profiles contain user demographics, professional information, fears, goals, preferences, and more. Basically, they tell you who your consumers are, what they need, and how they move online.

Creating buyer personas before proceeding with web development is a great practice. This way, you have a good grasp of what colors to use, how to word your messages, and the kind of photos you should feature.

A less familiar kind of persona is the accessibility persona. It focuses on the difficulties that certain users face when surfing the web.

Users with visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive disabilities experience web browsing differently from the majority of the population. As web developers and designers, it is our job to ensure that our platforms are made with inclusivity in mind.

What is web accessibility?

Web accessibility is concerned with helping people with disabilities have better online experiences. It takes advantage of modern tools and technologies to make websites easier to understand, navigate, and perceive under special circumstances.

Web accessibility not only benefits users with pronounced physical and cognitive disabilities but also those with situational limitations. For example, consumers browsing with a slow internet connection, those who are on smaller devices, and visitors who are outside under direct sunlight.

Investing in web accessibility forges strong relationships with all of your consumers. With more of our lives happening online, accessibility is a must to improve upon UX and overall satisfaction.

Website Accessibility Optimizations

So how can you make your website more accessible? We’ve listed a few things you can do to welcome a broad range of users and comply with website accessibility standards.

Use ARIA roles and attributes

ARIA or WAI-ARIA is short for Web Accessibility Initiative’s Accessible Rich Internet Applications. ARIA attributes are made specifically to fill in the lapses of native HTML when it comes to accessibility.

People with disabilities use special devices or software called assistive technologies to navigate web pages independently. The problem is, not all HTML, CSS, and JavaScript elements are rendered well when passed through these products.

If you include a custom checkbox on your web form using CSS, assistive technologies may fail to report it to the user and miss it entirely. By adding ARIA attributes, screen readers can spot it with ease and communicate it to the user.

ARIA works by modifying or adding to existing element semantics. You can think of it as adding labels on visual elements that are then read and interpreted by assistive technology APIs.

This way, interactive controls are highlighted, and users are afforded landmarks that help them keep track of where they are on the web page.

Allow users to enlarge the font size

Small font sizes are a pain even to those with good eyesight. For someone with visual impairments, poor font settings are the bane of user experience.

You might think that the zoom function and text size adjustments on web browsers and devices are enough, but you would be wrong. Some users, especially the elderly, may not know how to manipulate these settings. Additionally, they throw off your web layout.

A better solution is to have in-page controls that allow visitors to set the text size to their liking. You can add buttons at the top of your page with +/- symbols or upward/downward arrows to incrementally increase or decrease the font size.

Some websites come with a link to an alternate style sheet that accommodates the need for larger text. This technique is known as style switching and can be used in combination with the previous procedure.

Make sure that these options are readily noticeable. Position them conspicuously on the page and see to it that they’re easy to use. If you opt for style switching, consider providing multiple versions of your web pages with varied font sizes.

Add alt texts

Alternative text or alt text are brief captions assigned to images that appear on websites. They’re incorporated into HTML code to describe what’s going on in a photo.

When visually impaired users land on a web page, screen readers will read out the alt text to improve user experience.

It also serves other functions. In case images fail to load due to a bad internet connection, alt text will appear in their place. Furthermore, web crawlers use alt text to index images properly, thus adding them to your code strengthens SEO.

The trick to writing effective alternative text is to place yourself in your consumers’ shoes. If you only had access to alt texts, you should be able to imagine what the photo looks like. Instead of naming the objects in the photo, it’s better to paint a picture with the right words.

Do not overload your alt texts with keywords and keep them as concise as possible.

Support keyboard navigation

Keyboard navigation is a major criterion in determining web accessibility. Some users are unable to operate a mouse or touchpad due to physical disabilities.

Aside from moving up and down a web page, keyboard navigation must support access to interactive elements such as drop-down menus, forms, widgets, URLs, and others. It must also incorporate keyboard focus and avoid keyboard traps.

Keyboard focus lets users know where they are on the web page and which element is currently active. A simple border is enough to help keyboard users navigate websites better.

What’s important is a high contrast between the focus indicator and the background. On your CSS file, you can disable the default focus indicator and choose a more appropriate color and style.

Meanwhile, keyboard traps are barriers to navigation. If users interact with an element using the keyboard, they must be able to navigate away and move to the next item seamlessly; otherwise, they’re “trapped” on that specific dialogue box or control.

Work your way around keyboard traps by allowing navigation using the ESC or Tab keys.

Ensure good color contrast

Color is a basic element in web design. It’s of particular interest to marketers because it plays a big role in branding and driving conversions. But perhaps the most important function of color is simply to make it easy for users to take in visual information.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2 ensures that visual information is effectively conveyed. It defines contrast as the perceived difference in brightness between two colors expressed as a ratio.

White text on a white background has a contrast ratio of 1:1, while black text on a white background is measured 21:1.

The general rule in presenting text is to have a contrast ratio of 4:5:1, with a few exceptions. Large text can go by 3:1, while text in logos and decorative text has no strict contrast requirement.

Other components besides text need a contrast ratio of at least 3:1. This includes icons, graphical objects, and others related to the user interface.

Work with a Professional Team of Web Developers and Designers

Landing pages are made to capture leads or convert visitors into paying customers. They’re critical tools for the success of online businesses. Unfortunately, many landing pages aren’t optimized and have conversions rates. Read this blog to learn about common landing page mistakes and how to address them.

Landing pages are standalone web pages designed to produce a specific outcome. When users click on an ad or a link on an email, they’re brought to a landing page to continue their journey and move further along your sales funnel.

There are two general types of landing pages: lead generation and clickthrough landing pages.

The former is designed to capture contact information as leads become aware of your brand. Usually, an incentive is offered in exchange for their email address. Incentives can be giveaways, discounts, or free downloads.

The latter is more straightforward in securing conversions. Clickthrough landing pages are linked to product pages, price plan pages, or the shopping cart.

As you can imagine, a lot is riding on the quality of landing pages you serve. Their design, copy, and layout can pull consumers closer to your brand or drive them away.

Companies that use landing pages correctly bag more leads and conversions than their competitors. Unfortunately, poor execution results in reduced conversion rates and high bounce rates.

So you may be wondering—what are the most common landing pages mistakes and how do you fix them?

1. Generic Landing Pages

A typical rookie mistake is redirecting all users to a generic landing page. While you can get away with linking to your homepage in some instances, crafting a custom landing page will always give you better results.

It’s best practice to create a unique landing page for every marketing campaign. Brands with 31 to 40 landing pages report seven times more leads than those with just one to five pages. Furthermore, simply increasing the number of landing pages from 10 to 15 boosts lead generation by up to 55%.

The reason behind this is tied to user experience. If a visitor clicked on a social media ad, that user expects continuity in branding and your message. It’s not enough that you lead this consumer to your website. You need a landing page that provides specific information that is relevant to your promises found on the traffic source.

Creating custom landing pages is all about consistency. Use the same colors, content, and typography that appears on your ads as much as possible. And when you lure users in with a reward, make sure they can claim it hassle-free.

2. Unclear offer

The star of any landing page is the offer. It’s important to describe your product, service, or giveaway with as much detail as possible without overwhelming users with loads of text.

Internet users have grown more hesitant to divulge their email addresses because of the prevalence of cyberattacks. Consumers who are at the top of your sales funnel are particularly skeptical of giving personal information.

By practicing transparency, you can ease their doubts and drive conversions. Adding a photo of your ebook, showing a screenshot of your webinar, or featuring short clips of your demo go a long way in delivering better landing pages.

Also, indicate the limitations of your offer. Specify until when users can use their free trial or apply discount vouchers. If applicable, let them know which features are available for free and which ones need a paid subscription.

3. Too many distractions

It’s tempting to go over the top with your landing pages thinking that extravagant graphics and transitions will impress your visitors. Sadly, being too extra in your design only distracts from the real purpose of your landing page.

Minimalist web designs are preferred for landing pages because they direct users’ attention to where they should be—your offer.

Unnecessary photos, lengthy text boxes, and unruly animations have no place in successful landing pages. As a rule of thumb, anything that doesn’t reinforce your message should be scrapped.

The overall structure of your layout must be clean and organized. But don’t get us wrong: when we say simple, we don’t mean boring. Your design should still attract users and leave a lasting impression. The key is to tell a story and evoke the right emotions through the proper use of colors and imagery.

Showing your product or service in action is one of the best ways to help users immerse themselves in your brand. Just don’t forget the end goal of your design and conduct tests to guide future strategies.

4. Cheesy stock photos

Speaking of images, quality photos are secret weapons of high-converting landing pages. Our brains prefer visual data over any other type of stimulus.

Human faces are especially captivating and connect with users on a deeper level. That is why 44% of SaaS landing pages contain images that feature genuine people.

The keyword here is genuine. The point of these images is to create trust between you and your consumers. If they see a good shot of people enjoying your products and services, it gives them the confidence to make a purchase.

The same can’t be said when you use stock photos. Instead of improving brand trust, generic stock photos make you look like an amateur and raise suspicion.

If there’s no going around it, invest in high-quality images from premium stock photography sites. Be very picky because users can tell the difference, and it will hurt your conversion rates.

5. Slow page loading speed

While landing pages are considered separate from your main website, some rules apply to both. Fast loading time is something that all web pages should have to give users a pleasant experience.

Slow landing pages may be caused by a variety of reasons such as JavaScript issues, huge Flash file sizes, unoptimized images, multiple HTTP requests, and others.

Large media files are common culprits of slow loading times because it takes a lot to render high-quality photos, videos, and audio. Mobile users take a heavy hit when developers upload files meant for desktops without taking into account those on smaller devices.

Compressing videos and images is one way to reduce the required bandwidth. You also want to make sure that you upload media files in the correct format. JPEG is preferred over PNG because they take up smaller memory space.

As for Flash content, you can opt to replace them with HTML5. Then, clean up your code by removing unused or irrelevant elements.

6. Having a navigation bar

To cut it short, landing pages should never have a navigation bar. They’re lead-generation tools, so anything that encourages people to navigate away should be avoided.

There are tons of data supporting the case to remove navigation bars from landing pages. Hubspot found a significant increase in conversions rates by ditching top navigation bars and all external links.

Depending on your CMS, you can do this using a plugin or by inputting a line of code into the <head> section of your HTML file. You need basic CSS knowledge for the second option. If you don’t know how, have a professional web developer do it for you and apply all our tips while you’re at it.

7. Long web forms

Finally, let’s not forget about landing page forms. They need to be thorough enough to get vital information, but not too long that they scare users away.

After the seventh form field, conversions drop steeply, hurting lead generation and sales. That’s why adding fields must be on a need-to-know basis.

Short web forms are best for secondary conversion events because they’re less intimidating to new visitors. For primary conversion events, you can afford to request more information. In fact, some users expect detailed forms when reserving products online.

To make long web forms less daunting use multi-step forms. They outperform single-step web forms across various industries and are already in use in many reputable websites.

Boost Conversions with a Professional Web Development Team

Hire a team of professional web developers and designers to create your landing page and get the most out of your marketing campaigns. Contact DevWerkz today.

Web maintenance is an absolute requirement for online success. It includes updating software, optimizing site speed, and improving user experience. In this blog, we detail the top reasons why you need ongoing web maintenance work on your pages. Keep reading to learn more.

When the internet was first released for public use, there were only chunky computers with low-resolution monitors to work with. Web design was limited to pixelated animations and simple layouts.

Today, laptops display graphics in Full HD. Mobile phones are also quite powerful. Typical smartphones have screen resolutions ranging from 1136×640 to 2560×1440, while high-end models feature 4K screens.

Imagine if, after all of these advancements, we stuck to old school templates and static pages.

Web developers and designers maintain websites to take advantage of new technologies and all they have to offer. And that’s just one part of the whole picture.

We’ve made a 15-point web maintenance checklist on our previous blog but this time, we’ll talk about why web maintenance is critical for long-term success.

What does website maintenance include?

Web maintenance includes a variety of tasks that are aimed at keeping your web pages in top shape. There’s updating your software, fixing bugs, deleting junk code, and other web optimization processes.

Depending on the task, web maintenance procedures could take between a few minutes to a couple of hours. Some maintenance work is implemented over the course of months.

What you need to remember is, web maintenance as a whole is a continuous undertaking of improving web functionality, usability, and design.

Why is web maintenance so important?

But if you’re already happy with your website and your web traffic is up, why do you need to concern yourself with web maintenance at all?

Well, those stats aren’t going to stay that way forever. Consumers change. Their needs and preferences today may not be the same next week or after just a few days. Your website must adapt to these changes fast and cater to new demands and expectations.

More specifically, you need web maintenance for the following reasons:

On-the-dot software updates

Updating your website is non-negotiable. Plugins, themes, content, design, and all other web features need constant boosts and patches.

Using outdated software and third-party tools makes it easy for hackers to infiltrate your database. It’s also the reason behind slow site speed and declining web performance.

Your web forms, buttons, and hyperlinks may not work the way they’re supposed to, and some functions may disappear entirely. In worse cases, your website might get hacked and you could lose data or get locked out of your platform.

Google and other search engines flag websites with cyber risks and poor user experience. This means you’ll rank lower on SERPs and a warning message will appear before users can land on your homepage.

Committing to a strict web maintenance schedule ensures that you don’t miss any security updates. It also puts you at the forefront of your industry by granting consumers access to new features and technologies as soon as they’re ready.

Improving web security

According to SiteLock, an average website experiences at least 94 cyberattacks per day. By doing web maintenance and updating your software, you patch vulnerabilities that cybercriminals may find and exploit.

Getting hacked is very damaging not just to your business but also to your consumers. Large-scale cyberattacks can lead to downtime which results in lost revenue and weakened brand trust.

Customers are less likely to come back to your website in the event of a data breach even after you’ve resolved the problem. It takes a lot of damage control to earn back lost followers and rebuild the reputation of your business.

Regular web maintenance saves you the hassles and costs of dealing with cyber threats. Scheduled malware scans and occasional manual checks greatly improve web security by detecting malicious files as soon as possible. As such, you can reduce the malware’s dwell time and apply the necessary actions on your website.

Maintaining optimal site speed

Site speed is one of the website metrics that have a direct effect on conversions. Most, if not all, users navigate off a website that takes more than 3 seconds to load. Moreover, a one-second delay results in a 7% drop in conversions.

Large images, excessive HTTP requests, and unclean code, among others, cause loading times to skyrocket. Web maintenance keeps you on the lookout for such issues so you can address them before wearing out the patience of your consumers.

Compressing files and removing idle programs take a load off your bandwidth and help graphics render sooner.

A more impactful solution is optimizing CSS, JavaScript, and HTML code. Review your web resources and see if there are any unnecessary files you can minify or remove. Caching and using a CDN (content distribution network) are also good ways to speed up your website.

Conduct site speed tests at least once a month and analyze them against your baseline. Then, clean up your website as you go. You’ll notice fewer abandoned carts and lower bounce rates with consistent speed enhancements to your pages.

Delivering the best user experience

User experience has many implications to the success of your website. Platforms that are difficult to navigate have poor customer retention as 89% of consumers turn to competitors after a frustrating on-site experience.

Search engines also prioritize web pages with intuitive user interfaces and engaging content. Google Search has already implemented algorithm updates that take UX/UI into consideration for page rankings.

Apart from site speed upkeep, web maintenance involves updating content on your blogs, banners, CTAs, and more. This is important in creating messages that are appropriate with the times and spotting dated information on your website.

Web maintenance also covers the technical side of UX/UI—that is, improving content hierarchy, visual appeal, usability, and more. Take advantage of website heatmaps and other behavior analytics tools when redesigning your pages. You’ll end up with delighted users and increased revenue.

Maintaining your SEO momentum

As you may have noticed, your website won’t always be at its peak. Some businesses naturally attract more attention during seasonal events, and even when you’re selling staples, these numbers aren’t constant.

It’s normal to see waves in your graph, but if you can’t shake off a dip in your web traffic, it’s a tell-tale sign that you’re overdue for web maintenance.

SEO is greatly affected by the lack of regular maintenance work on your web pages. And because it takes a while to build up your site through SEO, it’s tragic to see everything disappear and lose momentum.

The whole point of SEO strategies is to attract quality leads and connect with your target audience. That’s not going to happen if your website stagnates once you get a taste of success.

Consumers and search engines are always looking for something new and want nothing but the latest information. Create new pages that focus on trending topics and continue to add value to your customers’ lives.

As you create fresh content, don’t forget to update old blogs and service pages. Double-check inbound and outbound links and revisit your keyword strategy quarterly. All these will keep your followers interested and engaged, encouraging them to come back for more.

How to do web maintenance

There are several ways you can go about web maintenance. You can do it yourself using free and paid tools, hire an in-house team, work with freelancers, or partner up with a web development company.

If you’re not confident in your knowledge, we recommend working with a trusted group of web developers and designers. Unlike forming an in-house team, you get the professional touch with fewer risks and overhead costs.

Learn the best practices of website monitoring, how to track performance, and set alerts to keep your site running at its best.

Website monitoring best practices involve keeping a vigilant eye on your website for performance and availability issues. It ensures that you can address problems quickly and delight your customers with the best possible user experience. Effective monitoring goes beyond simple uptime checks. It encompasses comprehensive oversight of your site’s functionality, security, and overall performance to produce optimal results for your business.

Website monitoring is the process of verifying that your website is functioning as expected across multiple dimensions. In general, it examines three critical aspects of site performance: availability, functionality, and speed. These metrics indicate how effectively your pages provide a seamless user experience, which helps maintain your top priority of customer satisfaction.

Every website owner should implement robust monitoring practices to improve services and adapt to changing market demands. Whether you’re using website templates or custom solutions, proper monitoring ensures your site continues to serve your business goals effectively.

1. Enable Comprehensive Alerts and Notifications

Preventive measures will always be more effective than reactive solutions. However, when issues arise, the next best practice is to detect and resolve them immediately. If you’re hearing about web performance issues from your customers first, you’re not responding quickly enough to maintain optimal results.

Alerts and notifications let you be the first to know whenever something isn’t working as expected. You need to be alerted to availability issues, broken features, suspected malware, slow loading times, and security vulnerabilities that could impact your business operations.

Essential Alert Types:

Functionality and error alerts flag broken click path,s critical in the buyer’s journey

Security alerts monitor for malicious files and unauthorized access attempts

Performance alerts track loading times and server response issues

Content alerts notify you of missing pages or broken links

Failing to address any of these issues promptly can damage your brand’s credibility and result in increased cart abandonment rates and higher bounce rates, undoing your marketing efforts in a matter of seconds.

2. Establish Performance Baselines and Thresholds

Being vigilant is essential, but over-vigilance can be counterproductive. Having alerts trigger every few minutes indicates high false positives, which distract you from other important business management tasks when there’s nothing concerning happening.

To minimize false alarms, establish clear baselines or thresholds for alerts. Define the upper limits for slow page speeds, error rates, and other performance metrics that warrant immediate attention. This approach ensures you know exactly when to prioritize website issues over other responsibilities.

Creating Effective Baselines:

Monitor and document typical performance patterns over several weeks

Account for seasonal traffic variations and peak usage periods

Set different thresholds for critical pages versus standard content

Regularly review and adjust baselines as your site evolves

Developing accurate baselines requires historical data, so start monitoring immediately and refine your alert profiles as you gather more information about your site’s normal behavior patterns.

3. Track Updates and Optimizations Systematically

Implementing updates is a non-negotiable aspect of web maintenance. Regular updates protect you from cyber threats and enable you to leverage new technologies that can improve your customers’ experience. However, some website optimizations can have unforeseen consequences that affect your ability to produce optimal results.

Adding new features, content, or built-in marketing tools can slow down site speed or cause existing functions to malfunction. While web developers typically back up your website before launching enhancements, problems don’t always surface until real users interact with the updated features.

Best Practices for Update Tracking:

Document all changes with timestamps and detailed descriptions

Monitor performance metrics closely for 48-72 hours after updates

Maintain a rollback plan for critical updates

Test updates in staging environments before deploying to live sites

Keeping comprehensive records of patches and optimizations helps you quickly identify the source of any issues. If your traffic decreases or conversion rates drop, you’ll know exactly where to apply fixes and can respond swiftly to minimize business impact.

4. Automate Report Generation and Analytics

The importance of website analytics cannot be overstated in today’s competitive digital landscape. To survive and thrive, you need comprehensive data to predict trends, understand user preferences, and make informed decisions about your online presence.

Automating reports on key performance indicators saves valuable time and resources, ensuring you don’t miss critical insights that could impact your business’s success. This approach allows you to focus on strategy and optimization rather than manual data collection.

Report Automation Strategy:

Identify KPIs most relevant to your business goals

Set appropriate reporting frequencies (daily, weekly, monthly)

Grant access to relevant team members for collaborative decision-making

Create custom dashboards for real-time monitoring

Many modern web monitoring and analytics tools offer extensive customization options, allowing you to create live dashboards that support real-time decision-making and help your organization respond quickly to emerging trends or issues.

5. Monitor Uptime from Multiple Global Locations

The uptime metric indicates your website’s availability and is calculated by dividing operational time by total expected operational time. For example, if your website should be active 24/7 (168 hours weekly) but experiences 5 hours of downtime, your uptime is 97%.

While 97% might seem exceptional, for eCommerce websites and other online businesses, even brief periods of downtime can result in significant revenue losses and damage to customer trust.

Geographic Monitoring Considerations:

Use globally distributed monitoring servers to detect regional outages

Consider network latency variations across different locations

Test performance from major markets where your customers are located

Monitor CDN performance to ensure consistent global delivery

The impact of downtime varies by business size and type, but studies show that even large companies can lose hundreds of thousands of dollars per minute during outages. Comprehensive geographic monitoring helps you maintain consistent service quality worldwide.

6. Monitor Third-Party Services and Integrations

Plugins and add-ons are commonly used for marketing automation, payment processing, and integrating your website with other platforms. On business websites, third-party services handle everything from data collection to customer engagement, making them critical components of your overall site performance.

These services add virtually any feature, from SEO tools to customer relationship management capabilities. However, they can also introduce vulnerabilities and performance issues if not properly maintained.

Third-Party Monitoring Best Practices:

Regularly audit all installed plugins and services

Ensure vendor support is still available for all third-party tools

Update plugins promptly to maintain security and compatibility

Monitor the performance impact of each third-party service

Outdated plugins create entry points for hackers and can significantly impact user experience. Historical data shows that a substantial percentage of website compromises result from unpatched themes and plugins, making regular updates a critical security practice.

7. SSL Certificate Management and Security Monitoring

SSL certificates are essential for all websites, particularly those that handle sensitive information, such as credit card details or personal data. These certificates authenticate your organization’s identity and encrypt data transmission between web servers and browsers.

Search engines flag expired SSL certificates, and browsers warn users before accessing sites with certificate issues. Even if your website functions perfectly, SSL problems will harm web traffic and damage customer trust.

SSL Management Strategy:

Set automated alerts for certificate expiration dates

Monitor certificate validity across all subdomains

Implement certificate renewal procedures well before expiration

Regularly scan for mixed content issues that compromise SSL security

Advanced Website Monitoring Best Practices

Real User Monitoring (RUM) vs Synthetic Monitoring

While synthetic monitoring tests your site from predetermined locations using automated scripts, Real User Monitoring (RUM) tracks actual visitor experiences. Both approaches provide valuable insights:

Synthetic Monitoring Benefits:

Consistent baseline measurements

24/7 monitoring capabilities

Controlled testing conditions

Early warning system for potential issues

Real User Monitoring Advantages:

Actual user experience data

Performance insights across different devices and browsers

Geographic performance variations

Real-world usage patterns

Combining both monitoring types provides comprehensive coverage, helping you understand how your website performs for actual visitors versus controlled testing scenarios.

Mobile Performance Monitoring

With mobile traffic often exceeding desktop usage, monitoring mobile performance has become a top priority for most businesses. Mobile users expect fast-loading pages and seamless functionality regardless of their device or network conditions.

Mobile Monitoring Considerations:

Test across various mobile devices and operating systems

Monitor performance on different network speeds (3G, 4G, 5G, WiFi)

Track mobile-specific metrics like touch responsiveness

Ensure responsive design implementation works correctly across devices

Effective mobile monitoring helps ensure your site delivers optimal results regardless of how users access your content, supporting your business goals across all platforms.

Business Impact Monitoring

Beyond technical metrics, monitor how website performance affects key business indicators. This approach connects technical performance to business outcomes, helping justify monitoring investments and prioritize improvement efforts.

Business Metrics to Track:

Conversion rate fluctuations correlated with performance issues

Revenue impact during downtime or slow performance periods

Customer satisfaction scores related to website experience

Support ticket volume related to website problems

Understanding these connections helps you make data-driven decisions about website investments and demonstrates the value of comprehensive monitoring to other organizations within your company.

Creating a Monitoring Strategy for Growing Businesses

As your business expands, your monitoring needs become more complex. What works for a simple website may not suffice for a comprehensive online presence with multiple services, applications, and user touchpoints.

Scalable Monitoring Approach:

Start with basic uptime and performance monitoring

Gradually add more sophisticated metrics as your business grows

Implement monitoring for new features as you launch them

Consider professional monitoring services for complex environments

Planning for growth ensures that your monitoring capabilities evolve in tandem with your business needs, maintaining optimal performance as you scale your operations and serve an increasing number of customers.

Integration with Modern Development Practices

Today’s website monitoring best practices should align with current development trends and technologies. As highlighted in our analysis of key trends in website development for 2025, modern websites incorporate advanced technologies that require sophisticated monitoring approaches.

Contemporary monitoring solutions integrate with development workflows, providing continuous feedback that helps teams maintain high performance standards while implementing new features and optimizations.

Building a Robust Monitoring Foundation

Website monitoring best practices form the foundation of successful online business operations. By implementing comprehensive monitoring, automated alerting, and systematic tracking, you establish a robust framework that safeguards your digital investment and ensures a consistent user experience.

Remember that monitoring is an ongoing process that requires regular attention and refinement. As your website evolves and your business grows, your monitoring practices should adapt to meet new challenges and opportunities.

Website maintenance is the process of updating software and content on a website. It keeps pages fresh and competitive on the world wide web. In this blog, we prepared a list of tasks you need to accomplish to keep your site in top shape.

A comprehensive website maintenance checklist is essential for keeping your website secure, fast, and competitive in today’s digital landscape. Website maintenance encompasses all the ongoing tasks required to ensure your site performs optimally, remains secure, and continues to deliver exceptional user experiences.

All machines need regular maintenance to run efficiently, and websites are no exception. In an ideal world, you could sit back and relax once your pages go live. But in reality, that’s when the real work begins. Website maintenance tasks involve checking for issues, fixing bugs, and optimizing pages—a continuous process that ensures site security and improves traffic and conversions.

We’re not going to sugarcoat it: site maintenance requires dedication and consistency. However, following a structured website maintenance plan will keep your online presence competitive and help you avoid costly emergency repairs down the line.

Understanding Website Maintenance Costs and Benefits

Before diving into our checklist, it’s important to understand that website maintenance costs vary significantly based on your site’s complexity, traffic volume, and specific requirements. However, investing in regular web maintenance pays dividends through improved search engine rankings, an enhanced user experience, and reduced security risks.

Proper maintenance ensures your secure website remains protected against evolving cyber threats while maintaining peak performance that keeps site visitors engaged and converts them into customers.

Weekly Website Maintenance Tasks

1. Update Software and Plugins

Updating your plugins, themes, and extensions is the most critical and time-sensitive task on your maintenance checklist. Regular updates ensure your pages remain safe from security threats and perform at optimal speed.

Security patches are released frequently throughout the year, so staying vigilant is crucial. While automatic upgrades are available on platforms like WordPress, manual rollouts are often safer for sites with custom themes and configurations.

Always back up your website before updating plugins and software. This precaution allows you to restore your pages to the last known good configuration if something goes wrong during the update process.

2. Fix Broken Links and Monitor Site Performance

Broken links negatively impact your website in multiple ways. They create poor user experiences and hurt your search engine optimization rankings. Whether the error stems from outbound or inbound links, visitors interpret broken links as signs of an untrustworthy site.

Investing in a comprehensive backlink checker is worthwhile for large websites. Tools like Ahrefs can detect faulty outbound links within minutes, while site crawlers help identify 404 error pages that need immediate attention.

Most broken links result from typos or the deletion of content. Review your list methodically, redirecting users to correct pages or removing problematic links entirely. Consider updating links in older blog posts to serve fresh, relevant content to your readers.

3. Implement Regular Website Data Backups

It’s every website owner’s nightmare: waking up to find their pages compromised or corrupted. While securing your website should be the primary focus, maintaining regular backups is essential for added protection, regardless of how robust your firewalls are.

Many web hosting service providers offer automated backup services as part of their packages. Additionally, plugins are available that save your files and upload them to cloud storage on preset schedules.

Unless you have backend web development experience, utilize automated backup solutions. For manual backups, access your hosting platform and run backup programs like MySQL to download complete copies of your website data.

4. Test and Optimize Contact Forms

Forms are critical for capturing leads and enriching your user database. Faulty forms directly translate to missed conversions and lost business opportunities.

Test your forms regularly by completing submissions and verifying that information saves correctly to your database. Ensure users receive appropriate confirmation messages or incentives after submitting information, typically via email confirmations or thank-you pop-ups.

Consider implementing form analytics to track submission rates and identify potential issues before they impact your lead generation efforts.

5. Remove Spam Comments and Moderate Content

Spam comments are more than visual clutter—they signal to visitors that you’re not actively moderating your site. This negligence suggests that you don’t care about what appears on your website, which can damage your credibility.

Search engines also penalize spam-filled sites, significantly impacting your search engine results page rankings. Additionally, spam comments consume valuable memory space, which can slow down your site’s performance.

Prevent spam by restricting comment privileges to registered users, blacklisting specific words, and limiting word counts through your content management system. Use anti-spam plugins on WordPress to scan your database and prioritize high-quality entries.

Monthly Website Maintenance Plan

6. Conduct Comprehensive Site Speed Testing

A site’s performance directly impacts user engagement and search rankings. Most users abandon sites that fail to load within 2-3 seconds, and Google uses site speed as a mobile search ranking factor.

Benchmark your site speed using tools like PageSpeed Insights, then implement optimizations such as:

Compressing images and multimedia files

Removing unnecessary code and inactive plugins

Optimizing database queries

Leveraging browser caching

Regular speed testing helps maintain optimal performance and ensures your site remains competitive in search results.

7. Perform Security Scans and Vulnerability Assessments

Website security has never been more critical. During the first half of 2020 alone, over 36 billion records were exposed due to data breaches, with 68% of business leaders reporting increased cybersecurity risks.

Scanning your website for malware and vulnerabilities helps you stay ahead of potential threats. Rather than waiting for suspected attacks, schedule monthly scans and monitor for anomalous changes.

Utilize comprehensive security tools, including Quttera, SUCURI, Astra Security, and Google Malware Checker to maintain your secure website status.

8. Analyze Website Performance Metrics

Website performance encompasses multiple facets, including site speed, responsiveness, and overall user experience. Many experts equate web performance directly with the perceived quality of user experience.

Focus on Google’s core web vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). These metrics have a significant impact on search rankings and user satisfaction.

Performance monitoring should also include traffic analysis, conversion tracking, and user behavior assessment. Identify your highest-performing pages and determine what makes them successful, while addressing underperforming content.

9. Optimize Your Digital Sales Funnel

In e-commerce, websites embody the entire sales funnel. Consumers enter through landing pages and progress through carefully crafted content and design elements.

Google Analytics provides valuable insights into visitor numbers, traffic sources, user behavior patterns, and conversion paths. These insights enable informed marketing decisions and help eliminate friction points from your customer journey.

Utilize performance data to craft personalized experiences tailored to distinct visitor segments, thereby enhancing conversion rates and driving improved sales performance.

Quarterly Maintenance Tasks

10. Implement Process Automation

Automation significantly enhances efficiency by automating repetitive maintenance tasks. Schedule blog posts in advance, set up automated analytics reports, and implement uptime monitoring to identify issues before they impact users.

Consider automating the following:

Content publishing schedules

Social media posting

Email Development campaigns

Security scans and updates

Performance monitoring alerts

11. Update Website Content and Strategy

Significant changes occur over three-month periods, making regular content updates essential for staying competitive. Beyond analytics data, consider current events, industry trends, and evolving customer needs.

Update meta tags, pop-up messages, calls-to-action, and ineffective UX/UI elements. Refresh outdated information, add new service offerings, and ensure all content aligns with current business objectives.

This is also an excellent time to review your website development strategy and ensure it incorporates the latest industry trends and technologies.

12. Conduct Accessibility Testing

Accessibility testing ensures your website serves users with disabilities effectively. This includes accommodating difficulties with color perception, hearing, motor skills, and cognitive processing.

The WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool identifies accessibility issues and provides specific recommendations for improvement. Proper accessibility not only expands your potential audience but also improves overall user experience and search engine rankings.

Consider implementing the following:

Alt text for all images

Keyboard navigation compatibility

Screen reader optimization

Color contrast improvements

Clear, simple language throughout

13. Review and Optimize Marketing Campaigns

Marketing strategy evolution is a common occurrence, especially for growing businesses. After three months, you have sufficient data to evaluate campaign effectiveness and make data-driven improvements.

Analyze split test results, user preferences, conversion paths, and return on investment for different marketing channels. Use these insights to optimize ongoing promotions and plan future campaigns more effectively.

Annual Website Maintenance Review

14. Renew Domain and Hosting Services

Never forget to renew your website domain—it’s among the most critical annual tasks. When domains expire, they return to the marketplace where competitors can purchase them and redirect your traffic to their sites.

Domain loss creates significant rebranding challenges and confuses existing customers. Enable automatic renewal notifications or set up auto-renewal to avoid missing critical deadlines.

15. Comprehensive Website Strategy Assessment

Annual reviews allow you to reassess your entire digital strategy. What are your targets for the coming year? Are you expanding your reach, launching new products, or entering new markets?

Answer these strategic questions and evaluate which website components need updates or complete overhauls. This is the perfect time to consider responsive design improvements, enhanced user experience elements, or complete redesigns to serve your evolving business needs.

The Importance of Professional Website Maintenance

While this comprehensive checklist covers essential types of website maintenance, managing all these tasks consistently requires significant time and expertise. Many business owners find that partnering with professional web development agencies yields better results, allowing them to focus on their core business activities.

Professional maintenance services ensure your website stays up to date with the latest security standards, performance optimizations, and industry best practices. They also provide access to advanced tools and expertise that may not be cost-effective for individual businesses to maintain internally.

Investing in Long-term Website Success

Following this 15-Point Website Maintenance Checklist ensures your website remains secure, fast, and competitive in an ever-evolving digital landscape. Regular maintenance prevents small issues from becoming costly emergencies while maintaining the user experience quality that drives business success.

Remember that website maintenance is an ongoing investment in your digital presence. The time and resources you dedicate to these tasks directly correlate with your site’s performance, security, and ability to generate leads and sales.

Ready to streamline your website maintenance process? Work with DevWerkz to ensure your website receives professional, comprehensive maintenance that keeps your online presence thriving.

Website launches are crucial to forming brand trust and establishing your online presence. While it’s rare to get everything right on the first try, some non-negotiable features need to run smoothly as soon as you go live.

Our comprehensive 10-point website launch checklist will guide you through the essential steps before publishing your web pages, ensuring maximum impact and success.

Key takeaways:

Essential web pages and content optimization are fundamental for launching a website successfully

Technical elements like SSL certificates and website analytics drive both security and performance insights

Design consistency and mobile-friendly websites create smooth user experiences across all devices

The Reality of Launching a Website

Launching a website is always a mix of excitement and nerves. After months of planning and writing code, it’s finally time to unveil your online platform to the world. People often see website launches as the culmination of their efforts, but in reality, there’s still plenty to do after going live.

It’s rare for a website to be perfect on the first try. Even the most experienced web developers and designers need to tweak their products after seeing how end-users interact with the pages. Regular maintenance checks and upgrades enhance conversion rates and improve the user experience, much like how AI-driven sales funnels continually optimize customer journeys.

Still, hitting a home run on your first pitch is crucial in establishing a strong first impression and building brand trust. Modern website visitors expect professional websites that load quickly and function seamlessly across mobile devices. Before publishing your content on the World Wide Web, double-check that your pages are ready to go.

1. Review Essential Web Pages

For any website, there are staple web pages you need to have. These include your homepage, about page, and contact page: the foundation that both users and search engines expect to find.

A homepage sets the tone for the entire website. It strikes the perfect balance between informative and engaging, piquing the interest of visitors and encouraging them to explore. Your homepage should communicate your value proposition within seconds of a site visitor’s arrival.

Your about page puts your brand and/or team front and center. It’s a place where you’re most free to tell your story and humanize your company, which is crucial for connecting with consumers. When they’re ready to get in touch with you, your contact page provides the necessary details and adds an extra layer of trust.

For e-commerce websites, product and service pages are essential for showcasing what you offer. These pages should include detailed descriptions, high-quality images, and clear calls to action that guide website visitors toward conversion.

Blog pages are also great to have, especially if you’re aiming to build organic search traffic. The majority of people on the internet surf the web for information, and blogs give them just that. Great content makes visitors remember you as a reliable industry leader, putting your brand top of mind when it’s time to make a purchase.

2. Proofread Content for Your Target Audience

Speaking of content, ensure your web copy is error-free and speaks directly to your target audience. Spelling and grammar are strong signals for trustworthiness. The fewer mistakes you have in your writing, the fewer distractions there are to detract from your message.

Use online writing tools like Grammarly to check your content for errors and unclear sentences. In digital marketing, you want clear and concise copy that excites and educates readers. Apply this to downloadable files, such as ebooks, pamphlets, and interactive content.

Next, verify the accuracy of company details and other important information. Contact information must be consistent throughout your website. Finally, ensure that all generic content is removed and replaced with the correct, branded copies that reflect your brand’s voice and messaging strategy.

3. Double-Check Images and Graphics

Web designers often use placeholders for images and other graphics when staging a website. These placeholders must be replaced with the actual photos before the website goes live on your web server.

While you’re at it, see if the images are in the correct format and optimized for fast loading time. Large images consume excessive bandwidth and negatively impact overall web performance. If there’s no way to avoid adding multiple photos to a web page, enable lazy loading to ease the server’s load and improve website traffic flow.

Another thing to check is if all of your graphics are properly licensed or cited. Review everything from illustrations to stock photos to avoid copyright licensing issues in the future. This is particularly important for professional websites that require maintaining credibility and ensuring legal compliance.

4. Implement SSL Certificates and Security Measures

Cybersecurity is one of the most pressing issues on the web today. That is why search engines prioritize websites that have strong measures against cyberattacks and use the secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol.

In 2014, Google announced that using HTTPS would be a ranking signal in its search engine. Website owners are encouraged to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to secure their web pages and users. This remains a critical SEO best practice that directly impacts your search engine optimization efforts.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates are crucial for e-commerce websites, as they secure sensitive information, including addresses, credit card details, and other private data. However, even if your website doesn’t contain particularly sensitive data, there’s no reason to shortchange your visitors and yourself in this regard, especially since many hosting providers offer it for free.

In brief, SSL certificates safeguard websites through data encryption and authentication. They ensure that information arrives safely at its intended destination. You can ask your web hosting provider to set up your SSL certificates, or you can do it yourself using an SSL certificate generator.

5. Prepare Backup Solutions

In a perfect world, the only thing to do after launching a website is to reap the rewards and grow your brand exponentially. Unfortunately, you run into a lot of hitches in the real world. Cybersecurity remains a significant concern for all website owners, as data breaches and website attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

When hackers aren’t just stealing data, they’re shutting down websites outright by exploiting their vulnerabilities. The best solution is to strengthen web security from the outset. However, no matter how confident you are in your firewalls and multi-step authentication process, it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in place.

Confirm with your web host that they offer a backup solution in case you’re faced with the worst-case scenario. It’s also a good idea to utilize a third-party solution for added security. Modern backup solutions can automatically save your website data daily, ensuring you can quickly restore your site if needed.

Don’t launch if you haven’t yet secured your web security.

6. Integrate Website Analytics and Tracking

We’ve said plenty of times that the work doesn’t end after the launch. Competitive websites stay on top due to ongoing tests, consistent upgrades, and regular maintenance. In short, websites are forever works-in-progress that require valuable insights to guide improvements.

Every decision you make to improve your website must be based on data. There’s no sense in revising web pages when you don’t even know what’s wrong with them. Website analytics provide you with this information and guide your web improvements for as long as your domain name serves your business.

Numerous website analytics tools are available on the market. They function to extract useful information from users and their web activity. Google Analytics is a comprehensive example that many websites rely on for performance tracking.

The platform gives insights into web performance, marketing campaigns, content effectiveness, and user behavior. You can use it to analyze your sales funnel, user demographics, UX performance, and website traffic patterns. AI-powered analytics can further enhance these insights by providing predictive analytics and automated optimization recommendations.

7. Test Internal Links and Accessibility

When you’re establishing your online presence, every interaction with site visitors bears significant weight. While you’re building your reputation, your website shouldn’t convey an amateur vibe; instead, it should make visitors feel immediately at ease, allowing them to listen to your story and possibly transact with you.

Two of the worst turn-offs are broken links and difficult user interfaces. Use a link-checking app to go through your web pages quickly before launch. This should take a few minutes, especially if you haven’t added many pages to your website yet.

Inspect your navigation menu to see if everything works as intended. Remember to make it easy for users to follow by sticking to conventional icons and layout. There’s a time and place to experiment with web design, but UI isn’t one of them when launching a website.

You also want to ensure that your website’s functionality is accessible to different gadgets and users with special needs. Start with the basics by testing how your pages look on popular web browsers, then simulate how they appear on mobile devices. Mobile users now represent the majority of website visitors, making mobile-friendly websites essential for success.

For comprehensive usability testing, use Google Lighthouse to evaluate website accessibility and performance, or any other SEO tool with the same functions.

8. Create an XML Sitemap for Search Engines

XML sitemaps refer to the list of resources and URLs for site indexing. They make websites easier to crawl and understand from a search engine’s perspective, thus boosting your SEO efforts and helping search engines discover your content more efficiently.

It’s a common misconception that only large websites need a sitemap. New websites with dynamic pages and those that have yet to build internal and external links also benefit from XML sitemaps. In fact, according to SEO experts, every website needs an XML sitemap to maximize organic search potential.

Many SEO plugins offer to generate XML sitemaps for you and automate the submission of URLs to search engines. Set it up early on to make sure Google doesn’t miss any of your important web pages when indexing your website. This is particularly important for AI-enhanced eCommerce websites that frequently update product catalogs and content.

9. Customize Permalinks and URL Structure

We’ve all encountered other websites with unruly URLs featuring long strings of numbers and symbols. These URL structures are unmemorable and do not add value to visitors. More importantly, they make it harder for search engines to categorize your content quickly, impacting your overall SEO performance.

Although visitors won’t navigate through your website by typing URLs directly, it’s a nice touch to keep everything clean and easy on the eyes. Permalinks enable you to customize URLs, providing information to readers and web crawlers while supporting both user experience and search engine optimization.

Search engines utilize permalinks to categorize and organize web content, serving relevant pages in response to a query. A well-structured URL can even appear as a clickable breadcrumb in search results, improving click-through rates.

On WordPress and many website builder platforms, you can customize permalinks and add tags right within the content management system. This feature enables you to maintain consistent URL structures across your entire website.

10. Ensure Cohesiveness of Design Across All Platforms

Finally, review everything one more time to ensure consistency in formatting and the cohesiveness of your web design. Every page should reflect your branding through fonts, colors, illustrations, and images. This consistency should extend across all social media channels and marketing materials to create a unified brand experience.

A strong indicator of good web design is when you can associate the brand with a web page even if it deviates slightly in layout. Cohesiveness doesn’t mean all pages should look exactly the same, but they should feel like part of the same digital ecosystem.

Pay special attention to how your website appears across different devices and screen sizes. With mobile users dominating web traffic, ensuring a smooth user experience across all platforms is crucial for retaining visitors and encouraging conversions.

Consider how AI-powered email marketing campaigns integrate with your website design to create seamless customer journeys from initial visit to long-term engagement.

Launch Your Website with Confidence

Following this comprehensive 10-point website launch checklist ensures that your website will make a strong first impression and provide a solid foundation for long-term success. Remember that launching a website is just the beginning. Continuous optimization, regular updates, and performance monitoring will keep your site competitive in the ever-evolving digital landscape.

From implementing proper meta descriptions and SEO best practices to ensuring your custom domain name is properly configured, each element plays a crucial role in your website’s success. Whether you’re using a free website builder or investing in a completely custom solution, these fundamentals remain essential.

Choosing the right framework is a crucial step to ensure websites and applications run smoothly. In this blog, we look at seven of the best JavaScript frameworks, their advantages, and use cases.

Any web developer worth their salt has spent a reasonable amount of time mastering JavaScript. The programming language is a standard part of modern web development; thus, it’s one of the most updated tools on the market.

To simplify coding with JavaScript, various frameworks are available. These databases enable developers to build web and mobile applications efficiently and quickly. JS frameworks can handle functions such as authentication, data management, user interface creation, and server-side communication, attracting both new and experienced developers.

Choosing the proper framework for web applications is crucial because it significantly affects their speed and performance. Below, we’ve listed 7 JavaScript frameworks and their advantages, key features, and use cases to make this decision easier.

1. Angular

The open-source Angular framework, maintained by Google’s Angular Team and supported by passionate users, is written in TypeScript. It features a component-based structure, extensive TypeScript libraries, and handy developer tools for building, testing, and updating code. The logic behind this framework relies on fundamental concepts, including components, modules, templates, and data binding.

Advantages & Key Features

NgModules are at the heart of Angular. They’re compilations of related components and code that define the function of specific parts of an application. Similar to JavaScript modules, NgModules also lets you import and export functionalities from existing NgModules.

Angular’s component-based architecture is another key feature. It allows developers to reuse their chosen components across different projects, making code more readable and easier to maintain.

Furthermore, Angular features a simple yet powerful syntax. It extends HTML to easily declare component functions and state changes. The framework even utilizes two-way data binding to connect the Model and View layers, ensuring consistent updates across them. As a result, you don’t need to modify an HTML DOM (Document Object Model), as it’s tedious and usually results in errors.

When it comes to community support, Angular checks this box. It’s hosted on Google and has a large community of over 1,600 GitHub contributors. Additionally, developers can learn the ins and outs of Angular with excellent documentation, numerous resources, and other developers ready to assist them.

Use Cases

Angular is considered one of the most efficient and secure platforms to build robust and complex single-page applications (SPAs). It works best for enterprise-scale applications because it’s scalable and easy to maintain. Additionally, Angular emphasizes testing and enables you to adhere to best coding practices.

2. React.js

React is a declarative JavaScript framework designed to build fast and interactive UI elements. It’s a popular choice when creating mobile and web applications.

Like Angular, React uses components as its basic, reusable building blocks. It also loads content very quickly, using a feature called a virtual DOM. The model renders modified content instead of the entire web page.

Advantages & Key Features

In React, components are split into two types: stateless functional components and stateful class components.

Stateless components are plain JavaScript functions that accept data and return them as HTML or React elements. In other words, they derive and display UI properties with no render method.

In contrast, stateful class components require a render function and are used to maintain internal properties and states.

Separating concerns and using a downward directional data flow architecture make React easy to learn and manage. Changing a state in one component can’t affect the rest of the properties in the application.

React also utilizes the JSX (JavaScript Syntax) extensions to help visualize UI elements and simplify component writing. This way, your code becomes readable, simpler, and manageable.

Moreover, React is continually updated with new features, including Hooks, Fiber, Concurrent Mode, and Suspense. Using these functions means reduced reliance on templated code, improved concurrency and rendering speed, and enhanced performance. They make React one of the best JavaScript frameworks out there.

Use Cases

If you want to improve a website’s SEO or maintain its search rankings while it’s redesigned, using React is a good idea. It has become one of the most SEO-friendly front-end JavaScript frameworks, allowing search engine crawlers to access and scan websites built on it.
Conversely, standard JavaScript frameworks capable of dynamic content rendering can harm a website’s SEO and block search engine crawlers from indexing web pages.

Online platforms with highly dynamic components, such as Airbnb, Facebook, Instagram, and Netflix, are built using React. Seasoned web developers also use this framework to create custom extensions.

3. Ember.js

Like Angular, Ember is an open-source JavaScript framework. The tool provides developers with a comprehensive package for creating scalable SPAs for businesses. Ember uses a Model-View-ViewModel (MVVW) architecture.

Advantages & Key Features

This front-end JavaScript development framework is known for its CoC (convention over configuration) approach.

Developers follow established conventions to maintain consistency and cohesiveness throughout their code. Ultimately, CoC eliminates the need for configuration, enabling quick web application development. This benefit, combined with comprehensive documentation and community support, helps beginners learn the framework’s fundamentals.
Ember is characterized by its controller, view, and model layers, which interact to build robust applications.

The model layer handles communication with the backend of your project.

The view layer works with the DOM to display elements on the screen. It’s also the component that responds to user interactions, such as clicks, drags, and scrolls.

Between these two layers lies the controller layer. Controllers receive data from a router and connect the view and model layers to switch between different states.

Moreover, the framework utilizes two-way data binding, enabling it to support complex user interfaces. Ember’s latest versions can be used with previous versions as well.

Use Cases

As we’ve mentioned, you can build SPAs with Ember. Beyond that, though, this JS framework emphasizes patterns and structure. It’s great to use if you’re after consistency and scalability on long-term projects.

4. Vue.js

Introduced in 2014, Vue is labeled as a progressive JavaScript framework for its gradual flexibility. This means it can be used to improve your current projects incrementally or build new, more advanced web applications.

Advantages & Key Features

With a small file size of 58 KB, Vue enables websites to load faster and run more efficiently. You won’t have to use more bandwidth, either, and the framework is downloadable and installed with its full library. As we all know, lightweight components have a positive impact on both UX and SEO.

Vue utilizes virtual DOM. Instead of updating the entire model, Vue maintains a copy of HTML pages and their contents, rendering only the parts that have been modified. In turn, you hasten page rendering and improve application performance.
Its virtual DOM is coupled with reactive two-way data binding, which immediately reflects changes in the model data onto the user interface. This method also helps to update related components and track changes hassle-free.

Moreover, Vue is a straightforward framework. React and Angular developers enjoy a simple learning curve and typeless syntax for more efficient coding. Vue also packs HTML, CSS, and JavaScript into a single file for any specific component.

Use Cases

Vue lets you build extremely flexible user interfaces and SPAs with its simplicity. However, if you’re creating more complex SPAs, the framework is best used in conjunction with supported libraries.

Vue is the framework behind the websites of well-known brands like Adobe, Apple (specifically its SwiftUI system), Louis Vuitton, and Nintendo.

5. Svelte

This open-source, component-based JS framework is a leading tool built with TypeScript. Developed by Rich Harris, Svelte has gained significant popularity since its release in 2016.

Advantages & Key Features

Unlike traditional options like React or Vue, Svelte enables you to build components without boilerplate using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It then uses a compiler to organize code into vanilla JavaScript modules before running the app. The Svelte Compiler updates the DOM once a state change is executed, resulting in fast, high-performing apps because the framework doesn’t consume too much of a browser’s processing memory.
Another advantage of Svelte is its easy-to-learn structure, making it perfect for new developers. The framework’s reusable components are written in simple HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code, allowing for use without relying on TypeScript or JSX.

Using Svelte also offers the following advantages:

A smaller bundle size because it works without a heavy JavaScript framework runtime overhead and as a compiler

An SEO-friendly framework just like Angular

Support for client-side and server-side rendering

Use Cases

With its set of advantages, Svelte is perfect for building interactive pages or apps with complex visualizations. GoDaddy, Rakuten, and The New York Times are among the companies that utilize this framework for their websites.

6. Meteor.js

Meteor was built on Node.js with an isomorphic structure. It’s a slightly commercial yet free-to-use and open-source JavaScript framework with a complete set of tools and technologies for simpler real-time app development.
Since its initial release in December 2011 and formal launch the following year, Meteor has gained numerous users and has been integrated into multiple developed web apps and websites. It’s now a widely used JavaScript framework.

Advantages & Key Features

There’s only a slight learning curve involved when working with Meteor. The framework allows you to write in a single language (JavaScript) for both the front- and back-end of your app. Additionally, web apps can be built quickly.

Real-time updates add to Meteor’s appeal. Pages built on the framework are loaded with the latest information for a smoother and more dynamic user experience. Moreover, Meteor is backed by a large, passionate, and intense developer community.

Meteor’s architecture relies on three main components: a command line tool, the view layer, and the atmosphere.

The command line tool is where you build and run your app.

The view layer shows how the interface will appear to end users. Meteor supports three UI rendering libraries, namely Angular, React, and Blaze.

The atmosphere refers to the collection of custom packages made by Meteor’s community. At the time of writing, there are 14,600 smart packages designed specifically for the framework.

Additionally, it provides clean and simple APIs and templates.

Use Cases

Many full-stack developers have chosen Meteor for fast prototyping and nearly template-free, real-time updates to web pages. If your developers seek both, they’ll love Meteor.

Meteor-based development is also ideal for startups and MVPs (minimum viable products). Combining Meteor with other web development tools and JavaScript frameworks can enhance its power.

7. Node.js

To complete this best JavaScript framework list, we’ve got the open-source Node. It’s a server-side platform compatible with multiple operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Unix, and macOS.

Node is built on Google Chrome’s V8 JavaScript Engine, using it to run JavaScript code outside a web browser. While this framework only supports JavaScript, developers can adapt some programming languages to work with JavaScript. In turn, they can build Node-based apps with those languages.

Advantages & Key Features

What’s special about Node is it uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model, which eliminates the waiting time between requests.

After receiving a task, the framework anticipates succeeding commands before returning content to the client. This chain of events contrasts with how PHP handles file requests, where the system prepares for another task after serving the content. Therefore, Node is very efficient since it works in quick succession.

The framework also boasts fast code execution and a single-threaded program that can handle a large number of requests, outperforming Apache and HTTP servers. Additionally, if you want to save on development costs, Node can reduce them by 58%. Long-time users have seen their development costs drop by 12%.

Use Cases

Node is the framework of choice for projects such as:

I/O bound applications

Data streaming applications

Data-intensive real-time applications

Single-page applications

It’s also been integrated into LinkedIn, eBay, Netflix, GoDaddy, and other popular websites.
