DevWerkz held its first in-person team building activity since getting incorporated in 2019. Get to know how we improved our team’s working relations and transparency in this blog.

A company’s greatest asset is its people.

In recent years, this statement has come more alive as businesses take a human-centric approach to organization. Rigid assembly lines are falling out of favor for a company culture that fosters collaboration, transparency, and open communication.

At DevWerkz, we strive to espouse and apply those values to our day-to-day operations. We believe that nurturing professional relationships within and between different departments helps us hit our mark and go beyond the ask.

This year, DevWerkz held its first in-person team-building event held at Casa de Amena from April 29 to May 1, 2022.

The private resort offered a much-needed break and a chance to finally meet the people behind DevWerkz’s success.

DevWerkz’s First

Even before the pandemic, our company has always operated remotely. This arrangement necessitates trust in our people. Luckily, DevWerkz has attracted only the finest and most dependable pool of talent, driving our business forward.

From just the three original full-time employees, DevWerkz is now home to more than 20 full-time team members plus a handful of part-time consultants.

With so many new faces on our roster, and countless hours spent collaborating, it was high time to get together in person.

“This is our first and hopefully not the last outing. I have high hopes and dreams for DevWerkz and like I said before, we’re able to grow because I’m surrounded by supportive, talented, and skilled resources who are like friends and family. We started off with just us three, and now we’re a bit more than that, but I want to still maintain the feeling that at any time, you can approach us for anything.” MC Leonie Rogado

Laying Back and Building Connections

The main goal of our team-building event was to get to know each other outside of our work personas. While we’re used to moving as a unit for our clients, the lighter atmosphere at the resort made it easier to forge personal bonds with the team.

Casa de Amena was packed with amenities perfect for fun and leisure. We had access to a swimming pool, karaoke machine, billiards table, basketball court, and mini arcade.

While everyone was free to do whatever they wanted to unwind, we made sure to huddle up when it was time to eat and have drinks.

To make the event more special, we allowed each member of our crew to bring an additional guest and their kids.

Day 1: Opening Up

The team traveled separately to get to the venue, so the majority of our first day was spent settling in and making ourselves comfortable.

Early attendees mingled amongst themselves with a bit of hesitance. But once everyone was checked in and shared our first meal, there were more voices heard around the table.

After dinner, we proceeded with a light drinking game, followed by free time to explore the resort. People with similar interests naturally formed small groups to play billiards, swim, or sing karaoke. Others enjoyed exchanging stories over beers and finger food.

The fun and excitement went far through the night, with most of our team members staying up until early morning. What was once a group of co-workers too shy to make the first move, we wrapped up day one feeling more like a family.

Day 2: Friendly Competition

Tuckered out from Day 1’s festivities, our attendees slept in until it was time for lunch. While eating, it was apparent how much the atmosphere has changed—everyone was more relaxed and candid.

To kickstart the program, DevWerkz’s top management led a quick townhall. MC Leonie Rogado, Aviana Rogado, and Jymyl Bandong opened the meeting with a warm thank you speech, acknowledging the effort of the attendees to make the event. They also recognized team members who weren’t able to fly out but helped organize everything from the itinerary to booking the venue.

“Thank you to everyone who made the effort to come, especially to the engagement team for organizing this outing.” Aviana Rogado

Important updates were also discussed, like the current state of clients and projects as well as new company policies that will soon take into effect. The meeting ended with everyone getting a shoutout for their impeccable work ethic and dedication to the company.

“Thank you everyone for the trust and for all the work that you do for us. Wala tayo here without the full effort of everyone, and let’s keep our culture healthy—communication and transparency are key. (Thank you everyone for the trust and for all the work that you do for us. We wouldn’t be here without your full efforts. Let’s keep our culture healthy—communication and transparency are key).” MC Leonie Rogado

Finally, it was time to shift gears and resume our vacation.

Team and Individual Games

Weaving a little friendly competition into the program was one of our event’s highlights. We split up into two teams: Team Avi and Team MC/Jymyl. Since many of us keep active and play video games, it was easy to tap into our competitive sides.

Everyone was eager to outplay the opposing team in relay and party games. The adrenaline was high and people were pumped while playing Pass The Message, Marshmallow Relay, Tower Building, and the Cup Stack Challenge.

After losing to Team MC/Jym in the first game, Team Avi dominated the rest of the team games and took the victory.

Trivia games were next in our lineup, this time played individually. Team members were tested on their knowledge of pop culture, movies, history, and anything under the sun. Up until the last question, the energy was high and everyone kept their game face on to come out on top.

Leisure Time

Even after a night of drinking and half a day playing games, our crew still had the fire to compete in a basketball match and billiards. Although, some of our attendees opted for less intense activities like swimming and playing with their kids.

Before turning in, DevWerkz held one last game: a beer pong tournament. As you can imagine, we were all smiles but also dead-focused on perfecting our aim.

Day 3: Winding Down

Since we had to check out early from the resort, the team was up and about before 10 AM to clean, pack up, and say our goodbyes.

Post-Event Feedback

We talked to some of our attendees to ask how they found the event. Jymyl says that getting to know everyone boosted his drive and motivation:

“Para sa’kin knowing us all in person sobrang nakakatuwa and nakaka motivate. Sana next year na agad para makapag bonding uli tayong lahat and macomplete (For me, it was really fun getting to know everyone in person and it makes me feel motivated. I wish it was next year already so we could bond together again, hopefully with the entire team).” Jymyl Bandong, Head of Engineering

For Johanna Dazo, DevWerkz is more than just a company:

“DevWerkz team is really not just a team but a family! ‘Yung kulit sa virtual meetings—10x pa pala in person. Sobrang light kasama ng lahat. (DevWerkz team is really not just a team but a family! The fun, friendly energy during virtual meetings is 10x more in person. It’s easy being in everyone’s company, everything is so light)” Johanna Dazo, Junior Project Manager

Similar sentiments are shared by other team members:

“It is good to see colleagues [in person] from time to time to create bond[s] and be closer to one another given our line of work.” Jose Dalida, Senior Project Manager:

“Communication is the most important sa team.. and nakakatuwa lang ung mga bosses how much they value their employees (Communication is the most important thing in a team. It’s great to see our bosses valuing their employees).” Jelyn Sequito, QA Engineer

Moving Forward

Based on the feedback from our attendees, we can confidently say that we’ve met the goals of our event.

Just days after we left the resort, we noticed improvements in our team’s dynamic. Everyone was more comfortable interacting with each other and voicing out their suggestions. Meetings are more engaging and transparency has never been better.

The outing was so successful that DevWerkz decided to arrange in-person team-building events annually.

This goes to show that investing in our people goes a long way for us and our clients.

Learn More About DevWerkz

The quality of your web host affects user experience and SERP rankings tremendously. In this blog, we created a list of the best web hosting service services in 2022 to help you choose the right one. Keep reading to learn more.

Choosing a web hosting service provider is a big deal. We all know that page speed, SEO, and web security are among the most important ranking factors that could make or break a website. What you might not know is that web hosts greatly affect these metrics and a handful of other UX elements.

Optimizing images and cleaning up your code won’t make much of a difference if your web host is not up to par.

Before signing a deal, double-check what’s included in web hosting packages. Ideally, web hosts should have uptime above 99% and offer regular backups and security checks. It’s also a good idea to research what other people have to say about the service provider.

Of course, if you do that, you’ll be sifting through hundreds of options. So to help you decide, we came up with a list of the best web hosting services in 2022.

1. Hostinger

Hostinger offers a variety of web hosting services, including—but not limited to—WordPress, VPS, eCommerce, and shared web hosting.

Hostinger’s team uses the latest technologies like HTTP/3, IPv6, and CDN to secure data and provide smooth online experiences. It operates on CloudLinux and regularly updates its system to prevent malware attacks and other cybersecurity threats.

Response time ranges from 11 to 274 milliseconds, while uptime is 99.99%. SSL certificates are included on top of a free domain, 24/7 customer support, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Its basic WordPress plan starts at $9.99, which is good for one website and comes with 30GB SSD storage.

2. HostGator

HostGator is a tried and tested web hosting service provider with over 2 million clients—30% of whom are web professionals. Like Hostinger, it offers round-the-clock customer support to address problems immediately.

Hostinger markets itself as a ready-to-go solution for WordPress website owners. Its control panel is intuitive enough for beginners to navigate, making it easy to set up auto-backups, restore previous versions, and handle account management tasks.

The web service provider reports 99.9% uptime and lightning-speed loading time to improve UX and SEO. Hostinger also scans your website daily and removes malware using top-notch web security tools.

You can avail of its starter plan for one website for $14.86 a month with 1 GB backups, a free SSL certificate, and a free domain.

3. Bluehost

Bluehost offers shared, dedicated, and VPS hosting. All four of its shared hosting plans come with a free WordPress website builder, domain manager, resource protection, SSL certificates, Google Ads, and Google My Business.

For $9.99 a month, Bluehost’s basic shared hosting plan provides 50 GB SSD storage, 5 GB worth of database storage, and 10 GB of database usage. You also get 200,000 maximum files attributed to your domain.

Meanwhile, its WooCommerce web hosting plan starts at $12.95 a month with 24/7 support to help you build a successful online store with multiple caching layers and on-site monitoring and analytics.

Moreover, if you have an existing website and wish to migrate your files, you can avail yourself of Bluehost’s migration services to ensure everything is transferred securely.

4. Dreamhost

Dreamhost is a leading web hosting service provider and winner of PCMag’s “Editors’ Choice” award for five years in a row. The company emphasizes web security as a way to boost visibility and earn the trust of search engines.

Dreamhost is packed with security features like Multi-Factor Authentication, auto-enabled sFTP, and free secure hosting with Let’s Encrypt. Its reported uptime is 100%, and Dreamhost guarantees fast and reliable services.

You also don’t need to worry about forgetting to backup your website. Dreamhost creates automatic backups of your pages daily and protects your data without additional charges.

For $1.99 a month, its basic WordPress hosting package includes a free SSL certificate, unlimited traffic, and a WordPress site builder, among others.

5. GreenGeeks

GreenGeeks is a fast, secure, and eco-friendly web hosting provider. Since its launch in 2008, it worked its way to the top as one of the fastest, most secure, and scalable web hosts in over 150 countries.

RAID-10 SSD storage, LiteSpeed, LSCache, and HTTP/3 are some of GreenGeeks’ secret weapons to reduce loading time significantly. Moreover, in-house WordPress experts optimize the technology to ensure 99.9% uptime. They also develop custom tools to give their clients a competitive edge.

But what makes GreenGeeks truly stand out from the rest is their use of eco-friendly data centers and servers. The company also fulfills its commitment to plant one tree for every subscription.

SSL certificates are included, together with a free domain, free CDN, and remote SSH access in PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and more.

A one-year subscription to InMotion’s shared hosting costs $3.48 a month. This package is good for two websites with unlimited bandwidth, 100 GB SSD storage, a security suite, and marketing tools. Its annual WordPress plan, on the other hand, goes for $4.49 a month with the same specs plus native backups and migrations.

7. WP Engine

WP Engine is a web hosting service we personally recommend over at DevWerkz. Over 1.5 million websites from across the world trust WP Engine, including big brands like Pandora, Yelp, and Thomson Reuters.

The web host schedules automated updates and daily backups to help maintain and secure your portal. It also comes with DDoS protection, a robust firewall, and SOC-2 Type II examination backing.

If you’re new to the online scene, WP Engine is the perfect choice because of its renowned 24/7 technical support, intuitive website builder, and premium themes and block tools.

WP Engine charges $23 a month for their Managed WordPress Plan with 10 GB storage, 50 GB bandwidth, 25,000 visits per month, maximum speed, and enhanced SEO.

8. Kinsta

Kinsta has over 23,500 clients in its portfolio. From websites and online shops to agencies and large enterprises, Kinsta delivers top hosting services and expert support.

What draws developers and website owners to Kinsta is their access to Google’s C2 machines and Google Cloud Platform. These technologies allow global availability and industry-leading speed to boost web performance by up to 200%.

WordPress clients are also given custom-designed performance monitoring tools regardless of their chosen plan. These show web administrators which parts of their web pages contribute to slow loading time.

Kinsta’s starter plan is priced at $30 a month for one WordPress website, 10 GB disk space, a free SSL certificate, CDN, and migration assistance.

9. SiteGround

Finally, there’s SiteGround. SiteGround is a powerful hosting platform with default static and dynamic caching enabled for optimal speed. It’s built on top of Google Cloud infrastructure and is quick to integrate new technologies and compression algorithms like Brotli, TLS 1.3, and QUIC.

Using Google’s SSD persistent storage, SiteGround has a failsafe in case the hosting server shuts down. Multiple redundancies allow the web host to redirect the storage volume to another hosting node without having to manually restore data. Meaning, your website is always going to be up and running no matter what.

Another unique feature of SiteGround is a custom PHP setup developed by the company. By reducing TTFB (time to first byte) and improving overall resource usage, web pages load up to 30% faster than average.

Pricing starts at $14.99 a month for one website with 10 GB of web space, a free SSL certificate, daily backups, unlimited databases, and more.

Final Words

Looking at our list, you might be tempted to dive in and sign a contract with a web host with the fanciest specs. But before you do, take time to think about what your website needs at this moment.

The size of your website and the amount of web traffic you expect are important considerations that will save you from paying for premium packages unnecessarily. Many web hosting services, including the ones we talked about, offer scalable solutions.

Also, don’t be afraid to avail of free trials if possible.

Google updates its ranking algorithm seasonally to deliver the best experience for its users. In this blog, we’ve rounded up the 10 most important ranking factors in 2022. Keep reading to learn more.

Google Search is undoubtedly the most popular search engine around. The company owes its success to its dedication to putting customers first. Google tailors its products to the pulse of its consumers, creating only the best user experiences.

Like the previous years, Google Search has refreshed its algorithm to prioritize key ranking factors in 2022. But don’t sweat. To make things easier for you, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know in this blog. Below are the top 10 Google algorithm ranking factors for 2022.

1. Fresh and Engaging Content

This year, content continues its reign as the king of the web. It makes a lot of sense for Google to prioritize content since people rely on the website for information.

The search engine has gotten a lot better at differentiating websites with high-value content from those that resort to keyword stuffing. Although keywords are still important, your focus should be tackling relevant topics and providing good answers to common queries.

Users ask questions with varying intent, so you need a slightly different strategy for each article. Remember who you’re writing for and make your sentences easy to scan and digest.

2. Niche Expertise

With literally thousands of websites to choose from, you need to set yourself apart from the competition. The best way to do that is to demonstrate exceptional knowledge and expertise. Not only does it earn user trust, but it also gives search engines a reason to bump you up on SERPs.

Google Search dubs a website as a niche expert if it has a cluster of at least 10 authoritative pages on the same keyword.

The first step is to choose the right keyword to target. Niche-specific keywords have less search volume but they give you a better chance to rank well and attract consumers that are likely to convert.

As always, you must understand your target audience and produce quality content without fail. The goal is to have consumers believe that they could trust your judgment and rely on your website for credible information.

3. User Engagement

User engagement was first introduced into the ranking algorithm in 2016. Thanks to advancements in click fraud detection, Google has been able to give it more weight in recent years.

The metric takes into account bounce rate, session length, and pages per session to determine how well your site encourages users to interact with your brand.

Stunning visuals and fresh content are the cornerstones of a great user engagement strategy. Both components motivate visitors to explore your website and ultimately convert as paying customers.

Providing live chat, personalizing UX, and gamification are some of the other ways you can boost user engagement.

4. Mobile-Friendliness

At this point, it shouldn’t be surprising that mobile-friendliness is on the list. Mobile commerce holds 72.9% of the total eCommerce market share, plus mobile users only get more numerous every day.

Google favors websites that adapt well to smartphones and tablets of different specs and sizes. This means that you need to take a mobile-first approach during development or redesign.

Users should be able to read text without having to zoom in. Also, they should have no problem pressing CTA buttons and loading graphics.

To test your website, use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test Tool. It generates your score in under 30 seconds together with a summary of mobile-usability errors.

5. Keywords

Keywords go way back to the 2000s when Google had yet to refine its algorithm. Back then, it was enough to stuff as many keywords as you can on a web page to boost your ranking. But if you attempted the same trick today, you’d only make things worse.

The new rule is quality over quantity. You must understand the different types of keywords, where to place them, and how to monitor their performance. Additionally, inserting keywords into your content must be done as naturally as possible.

Use keywords in title tags, meta descriptions, URLs, and throughout the main body of your text.

6. Backlinks

Backlinks are great for SEO because they tell Google that other websites vouch for the quality of your content. The more backlinks a page has, the more a search engine believes it should appear on top of SERPs.

Earning backlinks is no easy task. Your articles must be well-researched and organized to compel other content creators to cite your work. You also need to move fast and publish blogs on the latest trends ahead of your competitors.

The best backlinks are those that appear on popular authoritative websites. These generate quality leads and have positive effects on rankings. In contrast, backlinks on spammy websites do the exact opposite and must be removed by submitting a disavow file to Google.

7. Internal Links

Internal links are hyperlinks that lead to a different page of the same site. They’re used to establish content hierarchy which helps search engines find and organize information across web pages.

They’re critical to the ranking algorithm because they make the job of web crawlers much easier. When a web crawler or Googlebot lands on a homepage, it follows the first link, renders that page, and moves on to the next.

Internal links show Googlebots which of your pages are related and ensure that they don’t miss anything important for indexing. As for visitors, internal links are meant to simplify website navigation and encourage user engagement.

You can maximize the influence of internal links over the ranking algorithm by linking related content back to one authoritative page. This means you need to be mindful of information architecture as you develop your content calendar and expand your website.

8. Domain Security

It’s not just people who get turned off when they see your website riddled with spam and sketchy links. Search engines flag suspicious domains and warn visitors of the risks before they allow entry to the website.

If you get blacklisted due to poor security and past data breaches, your best efforts to boost your rankings are all for nothing.

Strengthen your website’s defenses by implementing updates, regular maintenance, and scheduled malware scans. Moreover, don’t forget to renew your SSL certificate and to backup your website.

9. UX/UI Design

UX is one of the newer additions to the ranking algorithm. The update went live in 2021 as Google Page Experience. According to the developer guide they released, UX as a ranking factor focuses on Core Web Vitals, which we talked about in our past blog.

To give you a quick overview, Core Web Vitals encompass LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), FID (First Input Delay), and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift). These three elements cover loading time, responsiveness, and visual stability.

But of course, there’s a lot more to UX/UI design such as usability, accessibility, information architecture, and interactivity, among others. Ultimately, optimizing your website for this metric requires a lot of thought and continuous improvements to nail a user-centric design.

10. Page Speed

Finally, there’s page speed. This ranking factor is actually covered by UX, but its impact is so great that it’s monitored separately.

Google PageSpeed Insights is a tool that will assess loading times and give tips on how to speed things up.

Usually, problems with site speed are because of unoptimized graphics or excessive HTTP requests. These are easy to resolve and make a big difference in user experience and Google rankings.

The customer lifecycle focuses on the experience of the customer from discovering a brand to becoming part of a loyal community. Here’s our quick guide to the five stages of the customer lifecycle and some tips to optimize your online shop.

The customer lifecycle describes how prospects journey through their relationship with your brand. It starts when consumers become aware of your products or services and ends with them standing by you as a loyal customer.

Lifecycle marketing or customer journey has commonalities with the traditional sales funnel. But as opposed to looking at the sales process, the customer lifecycle focuses on the end-to-end experience someone has as they fulfill their transaction.

Moreover, the sales funnel guides marketing goals and future campaigns, while lifecycle marketing is better suited for improving customer service and enhancing customer loyalty.

There is no better strategy between the two models. In fact, they’re used hand-in-hand in building a successful empire.

In this blog, we’ll define each stage of the customer lifecycle and give quick tips on how you can maximize results.

1. Reach

The beginning of the customer lifecycle is the first time they come across your brand and learn about your products or services. At this point, consumers are researching possible solutions to their problems.

They’ll be scouring through customer reviews, social media, and google search results to see which brand fits their needs. Your job is to raise your visibility and leave a good impression through value-adding content.

Make sure that you stay on your customers’ radar through ads, social media posts, and blog posts. Refine your SEO strategy and keep your content coming.

You’d know when you’re doing a good job when customers contact you, eager to get know more about your offer and get a quotation.

How to maximize reach:

Create detailed buyer personas

Optimize your SEO strategy

Invest in paid ads

Produce and share relevant content

Implement omnichannel marketing

2. Acquisition

The acquisition stage is marked by the tail-end of the previous phase where consumers initiate a conversation to learn more about your products and services. Depending on the channel they use, you’d need to employ different approaches.

Over the phone, you must probe the concerns of your prospects, respond to their questions, and get as much information as you can. The setting is perfect to portray a warm persona and build a deep relationship with your consumers.

Emailing is more common in the digital marketplace. Conversations tend to get more formal in emails but that doesn’t mean you should forgo personalization. If you do it right, you can get consumers to warm up and subscribe to your email list.

On your website, provide multiple means to contact you and enable a chatbot or live chat to answer urgent questions.

How to maximize acquisition:

Use a CMS

Create an FAQs page

Publish value-adding blogs

Offer free trials or tutorials

Hold one-on-one demos (if possible)

3. Conversion

Now comes the exciting part. Your prospects are closer to making a decision, and if you’ve made them feel valued and welcomed, they will turn into a paying customer.

Approaching leads with a hard sell isn’t advisable. Instead, nurturing customer relationships through meaningful engagements allow the conversion to happen naturally.

Apart from ensuring the quality of your products, you must invest in creating memorable customer experiences. Eliminate as many obstacles as you can for your consumers and personalize interactions to set you apart from other brands.

How to maximize conversion:

Make custom landing pages

Simplify your checkout page

Optimize your web forms

Recommend products based on web activity

Add social proof

4. Retention

As soon as you’ve made a sale, you need to put in the work for customer retention. A simple thank you message followed by a customer satisfaction survey lets consumers know that you care about them.

Go through their responses and learn from them. Discover what you can do better and put those insights into action. It could mean tweaking your website, improving customer service, or making changes to your products.

Do your best to offer 24/7 support and be transparent about your policies on returns or refunds.

Long-time customers and consumers who’ve made bulk purchases appreciate exclusive perks and privileges. Discounts, freebies, and virtual badges are some of the gifts you can offer.

Most importantly, re-engage with your customers through Email Development and push notifications. Make custom product recommendations and suggest internal blog posts that are relevant to their interests.

How to maximize retention:

Use customer accounts

Send re-engagement emails

Provide customer support post-purchase

Create a rewards system

Extend proactive customer service

5. Loyalty

Loyalty is the stage where customers bring prospects your way. They do this by sharing their experience on social media, writing product reviews, and referring their friends to your store.

Picture this: you’ve launched a groundbreaking product, and your website has been live for months. You’re closing occasional sales, but you’re not attracting the steady stream of customers you envisioned. This scenario is incredibly common for startups and small businesses entering the competitive digital marketplace. What you need is an effective lead generation strategy that transforms casual visitors into paying customers.

Key takeaways:

Understanding different types of leads helps prioritize your sales efforts

Lead generation tools and software can automate and optimize your process

Quality leads from targeted strategies convert better than quantity-focused approaches

What is a Lead?

A lead represents an individual or organization that has expressed a genuine interest in your products or services. While this definition appears straightforward, the concept becomes more nuanced when applied across sales and marketing teams.

For sales professionals, prospects with only casual interest aren’t considered qualified leads. This approach makes strategic sense—sales teams maximize their effectiveness by focusing on contacts who are genuinely ready to purchase rather than chasing every inquiry.

Marketing teams adopt a broader perspective in their lead generation efforts. Their primary responsibility involves nurturing customer relationships and guiding prospects through the sales funnel. Any person who completes a lead form, engages with your content, or interacts with your brand represents a potential lead, provided conversion opportunities exist down the line.

Types of Leads: Understanding Your Audience

Marketing and sales teams categorize leads based on their position within the buyer’s journey. This classification system enables businesses to deliver appropriate messaging and effectively guide consumers toward the next sales cycle phase.

Cold Leads

Cold leads represent prospects who receive unsolicited contact from your company. These individuals haven’t expressed prior interest in your offerings, making them the most challenging segment to convert.

Warm Leads

Warm leads have demonstrated initial interest by following your social media platforms, subscribing to newsletters, or engaging with your content. These prospects represent excellent opportunities for nurturing campaigns.

Qualified Leads

Qualified leads offer the highest conversion potential because they’re actively seeking solutions you can provide. Your marketing teams have already identified these prospects as ideal customers who are likely to make purchases.

Qualified leads break down into several subcategories:

Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL) – prospects who’ve engaged with your marketing content, such as downloading resources or completing lead forms on landing pages. These individuals require additional nurturing before receiving direct sales outreach.

Sales Qualified Lead (SQL) – vetted prospects ready for direct sales engagement. Both marketing and sales teams have confirmed these leads meet your ideal customer criteria.

Product Qualified Lead (PQL) – users who’ve experienced value through free trials or limited product versions, indicating strong purchase intent.

Service Qualified Lead – prospects who’ve explicitly expressed interest in becoming paying customers.

Lead Scoring: Quantifying Lead Quality

Lead scoring provides a systematic and objective approach to lead qualification. This systematic process assigns numerical values to prospects based on their engagement levels and characteristics.

Effective lead scoring considers multiple factors: demographic information, online behavior, engagement frequency, and specific actions taken. For example, prospects who provide detailed information through lead forms receive higher scores than those who submit minimal data.

The key to successful lead scoring lies in consistency. Evaluating all leads using identical criteria ensures a fair assessment and helps prioritize follow-up efforts.

Understanding the Lead Generation Process

Lead generation represents the systematic process of attracting prospects and converting them into paying customers. Think of it as a strategic approach to spark genuine interest rather than forcing sales through aggressive tactics.

The power of lead generation lies in cultivating organic interest. Converting curious strangers who actively seek your solutions creates less friction than cold calling reluctant prospects. This approach aligns perfectly with inbound lead generation methodologies, which can double average website conversion rates.

Essential Lead Generation Strategies

Content Marketing for Lead Generation

Content marketing serves as the foundation for effective lead generation. By creating valuable, educational content that addresses your target audience’s pain points, you naturally attract potential customers who are actively seeking solutions.

Quality content positions your business as an industry authority while providing multiple opportunities for lead capture through downloadable resources, newsletter subscriptions, and gated premium content. Your website development strategy should prioritize content that resonates with your ideal customers.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engines drive significant qualified traffic to businesses that optimize their online presence effectively. When potential customers search for solutions you provide, strong SEO ensures your business appears prominently in search results.

Implementing comprehensive search engine optimization involves conducting keyword research, optimizing the technical aspects of the website, and creating search-friendly content that addresses common customer questions. This organic approach to lead generation provides sustainable, long-term results.

Social Media Lead Generation

Social media platforms offer unprecedented opportunities to connect with potential customers where they already spend their time. Each platform serves different purposes in your lead generation process:

LinkedIn excels for B2B lead generation, connecting you with decision-makers and industry professionals

Facebook provides detailed targeting options for reaching specific demographics and interests

Instagram showcases visual content that builds brand awareness and engagement

Twitter facilitates real-time conversations and customer service interactions

Lead Generation Tools and Software

Modern lead generation software streamlines and automates many traditionally manual processes. These tools can capture leads from multiple sources, automatically score prospects, and integrate seamlessly with your sales funnel.

Popular lead generation tools include customer relationship management (CRM) systems, Email Development platforms, social media management tools, and analytics software that tracks conversion performance across all channels.

Building an Effective Lead Generation System

Step 1: Identify Your Target Audience

Before launching any lead generation efforts, clearly define your ideal customer profiles. Research their demographics, behaviors, challenges, and preferences. Create detailed buyer personas that guide your messaging and channel selection.

Understanding your target audience ensures your lead generation strategies attract quality leads rather than unqualified prospects who won’t convert.

Step 2: Develop Your Lead Generation Strategy

Successful lead generation requires a multi-channel approach that provides consistent experiences across all customer touchpoints. Your strategy should encompass Email Development, content creation, social media engagement, and paid advertising when appropriate.

Consistency remains crucial. If you commit to content marketing, publish valuable blog posts on a regular basis. For social media marketing, maintain active engagement and consistently share helpful resources.

Step 3: Create Optimized Landing Pages

Landing pages can make or break your lead generation success. Even the most compelling advertisement loses effectiveness if it directs prospects to your generic homepage rather than a targeted, relevant landing page.

Effective landing pages align directly with the traffic source and campaign message. Visitors from social media expect different experiences than those arriving from search engines or email campaigns. Responsive design isn’t optional when creating landing pages that convert across all devices.

Step 4: Implement Lead Qualification Processes

Not every lead deserves equal attention from your sales team. Develop clear criteria for qualifying leads based on budget, authority, need, and timeline (BANT). This qualification process helps your sales and marketing teams focus efforts on prospects most likely to convert.

Measuring Lead Generation Success

Track key performance indicators (KPIs) that matter for your business:

Lead volume: Total number of leads generated

Lead quality: Percentage of leads that become customers

Cost per lead: Total campaign cost divided by leads generated

Conversion rates: Percentage of leads advancing through each funnel stage

Customer lifetime value: Long-term revenue from converted leads

Regular analysis of these metrics helps optimize your lead generation efforts and allocate resources more effectively.

Future-Proofing Your Lead Generation

The digital landscape continues evolving rapidly, making it essential to stay current with emerging trends and technologies. Future-proofing your online presence ensures your lead generation strategies remain effective as consumer behaviors and platform algorithms change.

Consider investing in artificial intelligence tools, marketing automation, and data analytics platforms that offer more in-depth insights into customer behavior and preferences.

Why Professional Website Development Matters

Your website serves as the central hub for all lead generation activities. Expert website design and development create powerful first impressions that build trust and encourage visitors to share their contact information.

Professional developers understand how to optimize conversion paths, implement proper tracking, and create seamless user experiences that support your lead generation goals.

Expert Tips from DevWerkz

Based on our experience helping small businesses optimize their lead generation efforts, here are five proven strategies that consistently deliver results:

Optimize Your Website Loading Speed for Better Conversions

Every second of delay in page loading can reduce conversions by up to 7%. Ensure your website loads within 3 seconds by optimizing images, minimizing code, and selecting a reliable hosting provider. Fast-loading sites not only enhance user experience but also rank higher in search engines, generating more potential leads for your business.

Use Multi-Step Lead Forms to Increase Completion Rates

Instead of overwhelming visitors with lengthy single-page forms, break them into 2-3 simple steps. Start with basic information (name and email) before requesting additional details. This psychological approach, known as the “commitment escalation principle,” can increase form completion rates by 300% while gathering more qualified lead information.

Implement Exit-Intent Popups Strategically

Capture leads who are about to leave your website with well-timed exit-intent pop-ups offering valuable resources, such as free guides, consultations, or exclusive discounts. When designed thoughtfully and triggered appropriately, these pop-ups can recover 10-15% of abandoned visitors without damaging the user experience.

Create Mobile-First Lead Capture Experiences

With over 60% of web traffic coming from mobile devices, ensure your lead generation process works flawlessly on smartphones and tablets. Use single-column layouts, large tap targets, and simplified forms that are easy to complete on smaller screens. Mobile-optimized experiences can double your lead generation effectiveness.

Set Up Proper Lead Attribution and Tracking

Implement comprehensive analytics to understand which channels, campaigns, and content pieces generate your highest-quality leads. Use UTM parameters, conversion tracking, and customer journey mapping to identify what’s working and what needs improvement. This data-driven approach allows you to allocate your marketing budget more effectively and scale successful lead generation strategies.

Ready to Transform Your Lead Generation?

Implementing effective lead generation strategies requires expertise in web development, design, and digital marketing. Rather than struggling with DIY solutions that may hurt your conversion rates, partner with professionals who understand how to optimize every element of your lead generation funnel.

Boost conversions and refine your sales funnel. Discover proven tactics and CTA strategies that move leads through every stage of the buyer journey.

Understanding online sales funnels and how to make them is essential for any digital business aiming to turn website visitors into paying customers. A well defined sales funnel helps guide your prospective customer through every phase of the customer journey, from initial awareness to final conversion—and beyond. We’ll walk through each stage of the sales funnel, share actionable steps to build one from scratch, and explain why having a strong funnel is crucial to the success of your e commerce site.

What Is a Sales Funnel and Why Is It Important?

A sales funnel is a step-by-step model that shows how a potential customer becomes a buyer. It helps business owners visualize and refine their sales process. By understanding where users drop off and where they convert, brands can identify pain points and optimize each step for better performance.

This funnel-shaped model isn’t new. It dates back to 1898 with the AIDA (Awareness, Interest, Desire, Action) framework, and has evolved with digital marketing trends. Today, it’s central to designing an effective sales funnel that aligns with your company’s sales model and digital presence.

How Do Online Sales Funnels Work?

A good sales funnel model leads your target audience from being a stranger to becoming a customer—and ideally, a repeat one. It allows you to:

Track behavior through funnel analytics and key metrics

Identify where customers drop off

Improve customer retention

Guide the sales team and sales reps with a clear process

By establishing a basic structure, you ensure that your funnel supports both your business goals and your users’ needs.

The Four Sales Funnel Stages

There are four main funnel stages: awareness, interest, decision, and action. Here’s how each one works.

1. Awareness Stage

This is the top of the funnel (TOFU), where a user first encounters your brand through a blog, social media ads, or SEO content. The goal at this stage is to introduce your solution to a wide target audience, especially when you’re starting to build your website.

Your strategy here should focus on visibility and reach:

Use social media marketing to promote high-level content

Optimize blog posts for organic search

Run cold traffic campaigns through paid ads

2. Interest Stage

Once users know you exist, they start doing their homework. They compare prices, read reviews, and analyze solutions. Your goal is to earn trust, not push a sale.

Compelling content for this stage includes:

Educational blog posts

Product comparison pages

Thought leadership articles

Case studies

By aligning your content with their needs, you position yourself as a trusted authority. At this point, avoid hard sells. Instead, show that you understand their pain points and offer value.

3. Decision Stage

The decision stage is where prospects are nearly ready to make a purchase. They’ve narrowed their options and are evaluating what sets your product or service apart. Your role is to tip the scales in your favor.

Offer compelling incentives like:

Discount codes

Free shipping

Extended trial periods

Limited-time offers

These nudges remove friction and make it easier for the potential customer to act.

4. Action Stage

At the bottom of the funnel, users convert. This could mean purchasing a product, signing a contract, or subscribing to a service. But your job doesn’t end here.

For lasting value:

Send thank-you emails

Ask for customer feedback

Offer onboarding support

Set up triggers for marketing automation to re-engage users

Maintaining strong post-sale engagement improves customer retention and turns one-time buyers into loyal existing customers.

How to Build an Online Sales Funnel

Let’s break down the steps to build an effective sales funnel that attracts leads, converts users, and builds long-term value.

1. Analyze Consumer Behavior

Start with data. Use analytics tools to track what your users are doing on your site:

Which pages get the most traffic?

Where are users dropping off?

What devices are they using?

Are there abandoned carts?

Use this insight to refine your buyer personas and tailor your web design, web development, and messaging strategy. You can also start building your backend for better conversion from the get-go for optimal results.

2. Create Relevant Content

The strength of your marketing funnel lies in content that connects. While paid ads drive quick traffic, organic content builds authority and trust.

How to develop strong content:

Do keyword research to identify relevant queries

Address FAQs pulled from product reviews or support tickets

Create visual formats like infographics and short videos

Focus on niche angles that competitors don’t cover

Your content should serve every stage of the customer journey, moving people from awareness to consideration.

3. Run Paid Ad Campaigns

Use paid traffic to generate momentum, especially for top-of-funnel content. Contrary to popular belief, paid ads don’t just work at the decision stage.

You can:

Promote blog posts for awareness

Retarget visitors through Facebook Pixel or Google Ads

Drive traffic to content offers instead of product pages

Split-test your ads, analyze CTRs and conversion rates, and continuously refine your approach. Paid ads become more effective when they’re part of a broader funnel ecosystem. You can explore a tailored strategy for conversions and sales as you go along.

4. Build Custom Landing Pages

Your landing page should match the user’s intent and the message in your ad or link.
Avoid sending traffic to your homepage. Instead:

Create separate landing pages for each offer

Align content with the ad copy or search term

Keep it simplwell-definedlear call to action

Minimize distractions

This approach increases conversion rates and strengthens the connection between marketing and user behavior.

5. Strategize How You Present Offers

Not all leads are ready to buy immediately. Present your offer based on the funnel stage:

Top-of-funnel: Free trial, downloadable guide, e-commerce signup

Middle-of-funnel: Case study access, consultation call, or demo

Bottom-of-funnel: Product discounts or limited-time promos

Upsell opportunities also matter. Offer premium packages or bundles to boost average order value. Consider offering a downsized option as well for budget-conscious customers; this builds trust and expands your reach.

6. Start an Email Drip Campaign

Use email to nurture leads and guide them toward conversion. Email drip campaigns utilize automation software to send pre-written messages based on specific behavioral triggers or predefined time intervals.

Types of emails to include:

Welcome messages

Cart abandonment reminders

Product recommendations

Re-engagement campaigns

Drip emails keep your brand top-of-mind and enable you to maintain communication without requiring extra effort from your sales team.

Optimize and Refine Your Funnel for Long-Term Success

Building a sales funnel is just the beginning. To achieve consistent results, you must continuously analyze, refine, and optimize each step of the funnel. This turns a functional funnel into a high-performing growth engine.

Track and Analyze Key Metrics

A successful funnel is one that is measurable. Track the metrics that matter most:

Conversion rates at each stage

Bounce rates on key pages

Click-through rates on CTAs and emails

Abandoned cart percentages

Customer acquisition cost (CAC)

Customer lifetime value (CLV)

Understanding these numbers provides a clearer picture of how your sales funnel helps guide users through the process. For instance, if you notice substantial traffic but low conversions, you likely have a disconnect between the interest and decision stages. If customers drop off after purchase, that’s a retention issue.

Utilize tools such as Google Analytics, Hotjar, HubSpot, or built-in CRM dashboards to measure performance and pinpoint areas for improvement. These insights help ensure that your sales funnel provides a seamless experience for users from start to finish.

Don’t forget to track micro-conversions too. These include newsletter signups, free trial clicks, or product page views. These are signals that someone is progressing through your funnel, even if they haven’t converted yet.

Run Ongoing A/B Tests

Continuous testing is essential for achieving continuous improvement. Even minor changes can lead to better performance.

Test elements such as:

Landing page headlines

CTA button design and copy

Form length and fields

Offer formats (e.g., discount vs. free trial)

Page load speed

Visual hierarchy on mobile

Test one variable at a time and use statistically significant results to make informed decisions. Document the results of your tests so your sales team and marketing staff can learn from them.
You should also test beyond your website. A/B test your email campaigns, social media ads, and even SMS messages. The more data you collect, the more strategic your decision-making becomes.

Use Automation to Scale and Personalize

Marketing automation doesn’t just save time. It helps you scale outreach while maintaining a personal touch.

Automated workflows can:

Nurture leads with tailored content

Re-engage cold prospects with triggered messages

Alert sales reps when a lead is sales-ready

Segment users by behavior or demographics

Platforms like Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, and Klaviyo enable you to personalize messages and schedule them perfectly. For instance, a user who reads three blog posts in one week could be tagged for a free demo offer.

A well-integrated automation setup works in the background to push leads through the funnel based on behavior, timing, and engagement. This makes your sales process smoother and more effective.

Automation also supports multi-channel marketing. Leads who don’t respond to email might be more engaged through SMS or retargeted ads, helping you cover more ground.

Collaborate with Your Sales Team

Your sales team should be fully aligned with the marketing funnel. Share insights from campaign performance and audience behavior so they know how leads are engaging before they even reach out.

Regular communication enables your sales representatives to tailor their outreach, ultimately increasing close rates. Consider holding weekly or bi-weekly alignment meetings to discuss funnel performance and share actionable feedback from both sides.

Sales and marketing alignment can also help clarify what constitutes a qualified lead, thereby reducing wasted time and ensuring that only high-quality prospects are passed along.

Encourage shared KPIs so both teams are working toward the same goals. This can include shared dashboards, mutual accountability on lead conversion targets, and joint planning of promotions or content.

Prioritize Retention and Referrals

The most profitable funnels don’t stop at conversion. Build retention loops into your funnel by:

Sending follow-up messages after purchase

Offering exclusive rewards to existing customers

Requesting customer feedback to improve experiences

Encouraging satisfied customers to refer others

Launching loyalty programs

Creating VIP lists for early product access

Investing in retention is one of the best ways to lower CAC and increase revenue. Referrals from satisfied clients often lead to future prospects who convert more quickly and at a higher value.

Repeat customers are also more likely to engage with new product launches, beta tests, or bundle offers. A strong retention program adds depth to your funnel, not just width.

Address Funnel Friction Points

Every funnel has areas where users hesitate or drop off. These friction points may include:

Confusing messaging or UX design

Too many form fields

Slow-loading pages

Vague pricing or offer structures

Audit your entire funnel regularly. Walk through it as a customer would and identify anything that feels like a hurdle. Remove anything unnecessary. Simplify everything. The less friction, the faster your funnel flows.

Don’t overlook the mobile experience. With a large share of web traffic coming from mobile devices, a clunky mobile layout can quickly kill conversions.

If you’re planning a redesign to improve UX, read our insights on when it’s time for a website redesign.

Funnel Health Check: What to Review Monthly

Every month, set aside time to audit your funnel. Ask yourself:

Are leads dropping off at a specific stage?

Have conversion rates improved or declined?

Is our messaging still aligned with our target audience?

Are there outdated offers or broken links?

Have we implemented feedback from the sales team or customer support?

Utilize this review process to maintain a lean, relevant, and aligned funnel that stays in sync with evolving customer needs. Make it a team habit.

Create a shared dashboard that allows tracking progress over time. Funnel health reviews should be data-driven, not guesswork.

Build a Sales Funnel That Converts and Scales

An effective sales funnel turns curiosity into clicks and clicks into conversions. But it’s not just about building one. It’s about refining it continuously, using innovative tools, creative strategies, and meaningful insights.

The most successful businesses view their funnels as living systems, not static diagrams. They’re constantly evolving to meet their market where it is, not where it was.

Every year on May 31st, we celebrate Web Designer Day to honor all the hardworking people behind spectacular websites. It spotlights the dedication and creativity of these digital architects, inviting everyone to acknowledge how they help build functional, beautiful, and user-friendly websites.

The contribution of web designers to a brand’s online success is immeasurable. But what exactly do these creative minds do? To celebrate Web Designer Day, we’ll discuss a web designer’s role in creating high-converting websites. Plus, we interviewed our very own Pat Mapili to take us through a day in the life of a web designer.

What Do Web Designers Do?

Web designers create digital visuals that significantly impact first impressions, SEO, and the overall user experience. To convert visitors into paying customers, they’re tasked with grabbing user attention and delivering a cohesive, visually striking, and engaging journey through text, graphics, and layouts.

In general, a web designer’s work focuses on the following areas:

Visual design – the task of creating a website’s different elements: color schemes, typography, images, and more

User experience (UX) – UX makes a website user-friendly and easy to navigate. Good UX translates to seamless browsing.

Responsive design – This area of website design ensures visually appealing and highly functional websites across different devices.

Web accessibility – As the name suggests, web accessibility is about making websites more accessible to people with disabilities. It promotes inclusivity.

Moreover, web designers juggle the responsibilities we’ve mentioned above with other essential tasks. Some designers manage technical aspects such as registering domain names and working with top website hosting services, while others skip this task. You may even see web designers organize key design files and assets, update or redesign sites, and collaborate with other team members.

What are Some Essential Web Design Skills?

Web design requires the perfect combination of workplace and technical skills. Let’s look at these essential skills one by one.

Workplace Skills

A web designer’s job isn’t limited to creating visual elements. They’ll also need interpersonal and organizational skills to work with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
With strong workplace skills, designers can clearly express their ideas, handle multiple projects, and collaborate with teams effectively. All three lead to an uninterrupted design process that finishes and implements projects on time.

In a nutshell, web designers must have the following workplace skills.

Communication

Communication skills help web designers:

Know what clients want and ask them about their specific goals and target audience.

Express their ideas and design decisions clearly.

Update stakeholders on ongoing projects, explain escalating problems to them, and stick to established timelines.

Time Management

This workplace skill is crucial to managing multiple projects, delivering the most critical tasks, and finishing them on time.

Collaboration

Web designers are expected to work well with writers, developers, other designers, and IT teams. Most importantly, they must be receptive to constructive feedback and use it to improve their work.

Technical Skills

When it comes to technical skills, web designers must know how to build and optimize websites. This is especially important if your brand aims for high search rankings.

Many web designers are well-versed in design software, UX principles, and basic coding skills. They use all three to build functional and beautiful websites. In addition, proficiency in specific programming languages is a must for web designers because it lets them improve website elements and collaborate with web developers better.

Programming Languages for Website Design

Designers can use HTML (HyperText Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), JavaScript, Python, or Django to create websites.

HTML allows web designers to build a website’s overall structure. It’s used to add different elements to webpage copy, create links to web pages, design better web forms, and embed videos, audio, and more into website copy.

Meanwhile, CSS adds style to web pages. Designers use this programming language to change fonts, adjust color schemes, modify backgrounds, and more. JavaScript combines both HTML and CSS for more interactive web pages, creating clickable and easily accessible design elements.

Finally, the straightforward, versatile, and extremely powerful Python is built for web applications, games, statistical calculations, and other applicable functions. Django, a tool used to create sophisticated and scalable websites, runs on Python.

Meet Pat: Web Designer by Day, Gamer by Night

Now that we’ve talked about a web designer’s key responsibilities, let’s jump into Pat’s life on the job.

Pat is a 29-year-old web designer with nine years of experience. She graduated with a degree in Multimedia Arts and entered the field of web and graphic design soon after getting her diploma.

“I was able to learn the basics of web design in school, and although I focused more on graphic design, illustration, and print during my time there, I guess these helped me when it came to doing web design. The first job I applied to after graduating was as a web and graphic designer, and I’ve been at it ever since.”

Pat’s Work at a Glance

Although Pat is pretty young, she’s already earned her stripes and shown that she’s a force to be reckoned with. She’s behind DevWerkz’s website, where she showcased her prowess in illustration.

“I loved how I was able to incorporate illustrative elements into our website. It shows how we’re fun but mean serious business.”

Pat was also part of the team that revamped websites for Growth Rocket, a digital marketing agency, and City Girl Gone Mom, a lifestyle blog for New York influencer Danielle Schaffer.

Before joining DevWerkz, she designed websites for the high-end property developer, Rockwell Land Corporation.

When she’s not making world-class websites, you’ll probably find Pat immersed in her video games or comic books.

A Typical Day as a Web Designer

Before opening her computer, Pat spends some time alone to freshen up, bask in the sun, and complete a light workout.

“I wake up at around 9:30 to 10 am. I make sure to drink water, wash my face, get some sun for 10 minutes (although I forget sometimes), and do some stretches before I start working.”

Albeit short, those few minutes under the sun are essential. Pat considers this morning routine as a way to calm her mind before putting her game face on.

Behind the Website: A Closer Look at Pat’s Work Routine

At DevWerkz, web designers are given all their tasks at the beginning of the week. Pat adds these to her personal tracker and prepares the resources needed for her projects when she clocks in.

Every day is different for a web designer. Handling multiple projects at once is not unheard of, especially when business is booming. For Pat, being organized ensures the integrity of her work and keeps her from feeling overwhelmed.

“I make sure to list all my tasks down, review each of them, and take note of their deadlines. From there, I figure out which one to prioritize. I tend to finish smaller and easier tasks first so I can concentrate on the harder ones later on. I also ask the PM (project manager) what to prioritize if it gets too overwhelming.”
According to Pat, she doesn’t usually face clients since she gets all the information she needs from the team’s PM. Team meetings are infrequent and brief, primarily to share updates on their respective deliverables.

The key tasks are to collect data and design elements, and ensure you fully understand the client’s vision.

Pat’s Top Tools for an Efficient & Productive Design Process

As for tools of the trade, Pat uses Figma, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Notion, and Trello.

We’ve crowned Figma as one of the best wireframing tools for UX designers. It gives web designers multiple tools to create and tweak visual elements, including prototyping, design systems, and an online sketchbook called Figma Draw. Bonus: You can work on projects with other users in real time and produce code for finished designs on Figma.

Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator are under the brand’s Creative Cloud suite. One lets you edit images and create eye-catching graphics for websites, while the other is considered an industry-standard vector design tool. Additionally, both of these programs have AI built into them for faster work.

Last but not least, Notion and Trello make project management more effortless. With Notion, you can build a knowledge base for projects and track progress within customizable workspaces. Trello is a digital Kanban board that shows all of your current tasks. Important information about each task is specified on individual cards so that you can perform your deliverables immediately and effortlessly.

Break Times & Winding Down

Preventing burnout is also a crucial part of any web designer’s workflow. Pat takes breaks in between tasks to keep herself from overthinking.

“I go out to pet my dogs for a bit to reset my brain. Sometimes, I reward myself for finishing a specific goal, like reading one chapter of a comic book after a tough task.”

At the end of her shift, she makes sure to outline tasks for the following day.

“I mirror tasks in Notion to my personal tracker (Trello). I make sure to include everything (i.e., briefs, pegs, files). I even include the filepaths to that specific task folder: the filepath on the computer, links to Figma, and Dropbox folders. This makes it easier to reference them when needed.”

A Short Rundown of Pat’s Daily Routine

Pat’s working day goes like this:

9:30 AM – wake up, drink water, wash my face, get some sun, and do some stretches

10 AM – check Notion for new and updated tasks; mirror changes to personal tracker

10:30 AM – research on client requests (i.e, reading briefs, searching for design inspiration, and preparing elements needed for the designs)

11 AM – start design and layout

1 PM – lunch break

2 PM – continue working

3 PM – do revisions for a different task

4 PM – start on a new task

6:30 PM – reviewing functions for the next day; asking project manager questions or file requests

When the Computer is Off…

After a long day behind the desk, Pat unwinds and recharges in different ways.
She’s a furmom to three dogs, a food lover, a big bookworm, and a serious gamer. Comic books make her especially happy, along with conquering Splatoon and the Dishonored series on her computer.
Pat also shares her long love for illustration, stating, “I used to be very passionate about illustration back when I was in college (I used to want to be a VisDev artist!). I still am, but not to the point where I would want to do it as my main job or source of income.”

Tips & Tricks From a Seasoned Web Designer

Looking back at her journey, Pat has these things to say about the field and to aspiring web designers:

The Learning Never Stops

“You have to keep learning constantly. It’s the same thing in graphic design, I just never truly realized it at the time.”

Focus On Your Strengths

“You don’t have to stress or burn yourself out trying to specialize in everything. Just do your best in your niche.”

Communication Skills Are Important

“Hone your communication skills so that you can successfully express your ideas, questions, and other sentiments to your clients.” After all, these skills are key to helping clients attract and convert their target audiences with well-designed websites.

Embrace Constructive Criticism

“Don’t take any negative feedback to heart and just learn from your mistakes to be better.”

Bonus: More Words to Live By

“You can get anywhere if you simply go one step at a time.” – Dave Ramsey
